Regular Season Round 7: Irbis - Astana 68-87

The game between second ranked Irbis (6-6) and fifth ranked Astana (5-5) was the most important one in the last round on Wednesday night. Irbis were crushed by Astana in Almaty 87-68. Astana forced 19 Irbis turnovers. 27 personal fouls committed by Irbis helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a great evening for American point guard Markell Johnson (188-1998, college: NC State) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 30 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. International center Dmitriy Gavrilov (204-1986) helped adding 16 points and 10 rebounds. At the losing side American guard Aaron Felix (187-1987) responded with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and the former international forward Nikolay Bazhin (198-1990) scored 19 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Irbis' coach Evgeni Isakov rotated ten players seeing no chance for a win. Defending champion moved-up to fourth place. Newly promoted Irbis dropped to the third position with six games lost. Astana are looking forward to face league's leader Tobol in Kostanay in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Irbis will play at home against the league's leader Tobol and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
