Regular Season Round 9: Chiba - Yamagata 87-73

There was no surprise when 5th ranked Yamagata (4-7) was defeated on the road by second ranked Chiba (8-3) 87-73 on Sunday. Chiba forced 22 Yamagata turnovers. It was a great shooting night for Chiba especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 57.1 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. The game was dominated by American players. Brandon Ashley (206-1994, college: Arizona) stepped up and scored 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and forward Leo Lyons (206-1987, college: Missouri) chipped in 16 points and 4 assists. The best for the losing side was James Bell (196-1992, college: Villanova, agency: Slash Sports) with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists and center Thomas Welsh (213-1996, college: UCLA, agency: Pensack Sports) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Yamagata's coach tested eleven players and allowed the starting five to rest. Newly promoted Chiba maintains second place with 8-3 record behind leader Ehime OV, which they share with Nagasaki. Loser Yamagata keeps the fifth position with seven games lost. Chiba will meet at home league's second-placed Nagasaki in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Yamagata will play against Nishinomiya S. in Hyogo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
