Bangladesh Fall in Bronze-Medal Game to Finish Fourth at U18 SABA Qualifiers- June 10, 2026Bangladesh's young men came away empty-handed from the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2026 SABA Qualifiers, edged 62-59 by the Maldives in the third-place game to finish fourth in the four-team South Asian event.
The defeat stung all the more because of what had come before it. Earlier in the group phase, Bangladesh had crushed the very same Maldives side by around 40 points, making them clear favorites for the bronze. But on a dramatic final day in Colombo, the Maldivians flipped the script, holding on for a three-point win to claim third place and leave Bangladesh in last of the four nations. Bangladesh had been unable to break through against the Sub-Zone's top two. India, the hosts of the upcoming continental tournament, and Sri Lanka separated themselves from the pack and met in the final, which India won 78-56 to top the Sub-Zone rankings. Both India already qualified as hosts and runners-up Sri Lanka booked their places at the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad from August 13-23. Bangladesh and the Maldives did not advance. For the Bangladesh Basketball Federation, the qualifiers offered valuable competitive exposure for its U18 program, even as the fourth-place finish underlined the gap the Sub-Zone's developing sides still face in closing on India and Sri Lanka. |
