Manama crowned Zain Bahrain Basketball League champions - Apr 19, 2022

Manama pulled off an incredible, come-from-behind 82-81 win at Khalifa Sport City against arch-rivals Muharraq to be crowned the Zain Bahrain Basketball League champions last night. All had seemed lost for Manama as the high-intensity third play-off ticked into its final minute with Muharraq leading 79-74. But, somehow, the Manama players rallied, scrounging precious points until the final few seconds of the game arrived, with Muharraq still ahead 81-79. Manama's Devin Ebanks (206-F-1989, college: WVU) then created one of the most memorable events in sporting history as he scored a literal last-gasp three-pointer to help his side gain a one-point lead over Muharraq with just a second left to play. Suddenly - and against all odds - Manama were ahead 82-81. After a short time-out, Muharraq needed to try and create some magic of their own in the second they had. And Sammy Monroe (198-F-1985, college: Newberry) almost made it count, trying for a two-pointer that would have sealed the win for his team. But his attempt fell just agonisingly short, bouncing off the basket's rim as the buzzer went off and the Manama players began to celebrate. The two teams had entered the last game of the three-match final play-offs tied 1-1 after Muharraq won the first match and Manama clinched the second. With all to play for, both teams refused to give an inch as the first quarter saw Manama draw ahead 26-23 and maintain a slim lead with 43-40 at the end of the second. By the time the third quarter ended, Manama had managed to hold on to their slender advantage at 60-56. But Muharraq were not giving up and, buoyed by stellar performances by the impressive Hussain Shaker and Dewayne Jackson (203-F-1990, college: Morgan St.), clawed their way back into contention. Suddenly, they had surged ahead of Manama and must have thought the trophy was their's until Ebanks decided to turn the game on its head. As the champions began to celebrate, an unpleasant altercation between some Muharraq and Manama players threatened to sour the occasion. But the situation was quickly diffused and, soon, the winners' shouts of jubilation resounded around the arena as captain Mohammed Hussain lifted the trophy. It was just a shame the fans were not able to join in the celebrations as the game was played behind closed doors. As reported on GDNonline yesterday the authorities made the decision after crowd trouble erupted at the end of the second of three games. Noisy celebrations instead took place late into last night with supporters waving flags and honking car horns across Manama and close to the team's home in Juffair. Manama will now set sights on the second title of the season when they clash with Riffa in the final of the Khalifa Bin Salman Cup, to be played next Monday at Khalifa Sport City.

Al Ahli wins Khalifa bin Salman Cup - Apr 26, 2022

Defending champions Al Ahli shattered Manama's hopes of a league-and-cup double by producing a stellar fourth quarter performance to win the 2021-22 Khalifa Bin Salman Cup 84-76 at Khalifa Sports City last night. Jamaican-American Adrian Uter (201-F/C-1984, college: Hofstra, agency: BeoBasket) was the star for Al Ahli with 22 points, combining with the excellent Hisham Sirhan, who netted 20, to put the cup beyond Manama's reach. Manama had started the final strongly, led by their charismatic American star, Devin Ebanks (206-F-1989, college: WVU) - who finished eventually with 26 points - ending the first quarter 22-17. They maintained their lead in the second quarter, fighting off a strong charge by a determined Al Ahli side, ending the second quarter 42-41. But Al Ahli had built up some momentum and they capitalised on it after the halfway point, piling on the pressure as Manama began to make unforced errors. By the time the third quarter ended, Al Ahli had crept ahead 65-59. A six-point lead was always going to be hard for Manama to make up but they tried, manfully, with Mohammed Ameer (PF-1995), who finished with 21 points, proving an able partner to Ebanks. However, Al Ahli continued to build on their advantage and, although, with one minute remaining, Manama had managed to claw their way back to within two points of Al Ahli at 76-78, the defending champions held their nerve and added six more points to their tally in the game's final 60 seconds without letting their opponents score even a single point more. Al Ahli were, doubtless, helped by the fact that they had loud, vociferous support in the form of their fans, who filled up half the stadium. Manama, in contrast, had no fans on hand to support them because their supporters are serving out a three-match ban after an ugly brawl with Muharraq fans following the second playoff for the Zain Bahrain Basketball League ten days ago.

Al Ahly beat Manama to retain the Basketball supercup - Sep 10, 2021

Al Ahli beat Manama 90-69 to retain the Basketball Super Cup for the second year in a row. The match was played at the Zain Bahrain Basketball Arena in Um Al-Hasam in presence of fans who returned to stadiums after lifting the ban which was imposed due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) succeeded in implementing the mandatory precautionary measures for combating the pandemic, under the supervision of the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC). Manama won the first two quarters, beating Al Ahli 14-13 and 28-24. However, Al Ahli bounced back to dominate the third and fourth quarters 32-10 and 21-17 and claim the trophy. General Sports Authority (GSA) Vice Chairman HH Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa presented Al Ahli with the trophy.
