THE Manama dynasty continues after being crowned champions for the fifth successive season in the Zain Bahrain Basketball League last night. Manama secured their title after thoroughly outplaying bitter rivals Al Ahli 88-78 in game four of their best-of-five championship series. Yesterday's clash was more one-sided than the final score suggests. The 3-1 ending to the series earned Manama their 21st league title overall and it secured the club an unprecedented treble for the 2017/2018 campaign. Manama had also won the Bahrain Super Cup to start the season and then the Khalifa bin Salman Cup earlier this month. Manama players and officials were presented their glittering league trophy and medals by Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) president Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa during the awards presentation after the contest. Also on hand were Bahrain Olympic Committee general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, Bahrain Handball Association president Ali Isa and BBA secretary general Abdulelah Abdulghaffar. Coached by veteran Bahraini tactician Aqeel Milad , Manama were firing on all cylinders in the game, building leads of more than 20 points in the first half and never looking back. The victors took advantage of their opponents' porous defence and controlled a quick tempo from the jump. Manama had already posted 34 points in the first quarter alone before cooling down a bit in the second, at the end of which they enjoyed a 54-32 lead. After the break, Manama continued to stay in control despite Ahli's best efforts to try and get back into the game, and by the end of the third with Manama enjoying a commanding 76-51 advantage, the title celebrations had already begun. The fourth and final quarter seemed a mere formality as the boys in blue were simply just too good for the evening and their firepower too much for their opponents to overcome. Manama went up by as many as 27 early on in the payoff period but Ahli managed to get the final gap down to just 10 points, with most of their scoring coming in garbage time. Manama enjoyed a balanced attack last night from their star-studded roster. Do-it-all Bahraini forward Mohammed Kuwayed and American professional Wayne Chism (206-PF-87, college: Tennessee) led the way with 15 points apiece. Kuwayed also had eight rebounds and four assists while Chism added 10 rebounds and five assists to the stat sheet. Young big man Mohammed Ameer came off the bench to post 14 markers while also grabbing nine rebounds, and sweet-shooting guard Hassan Nowrooz also had 14 points including three three-pointers. Court general Ahmed Abdulaziz finished the game with 13 points, four rebounds and an impressive 10 assists, for Manama while Maytham Jameel fired in 11 points against his former team in the win. Ahli's Bahraini guard Hussain Shaker and seven-foot, two-inch centre Loren Woods (218-C-78, college: Arizona) combined for 50 points for their team. Woods top scored with 27 including 16 rebounds, while Shaker had 23 including three triples, to go with five assists and three steals. Manama win Cup of glory - Apr 6, 2018
MIGHTY Manama lifted the prestigious Khalifa bin Salman Cup last night following a nail-biting 82-79 victory over bitter rivals Muharraq in the tournament final, played at a rocking Khalifa Sports City arena in Isa Town. Talented two-guard Maytham Jameel made a pair of pressure-packed free-throws with just six seconds to play to help Manama come away with the win. Muharraq tried to tie the proceedings with the little time left on the clock but they could not produce a quality attempt before the final buzzer. Bahrain Basketball Association President His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa was present at the game. Shaikh Isa handed over the coveted trophy to the winners, as well as their medals. Also in attendance were Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs Hisham Al Jowder and other high-ranking officials from both clubs. Do-it-all forward Mohammed Kuwayed, guard Hassan Nowrooz and American professional Wayne Chism (206-PF-87, college: Tennessee) combined for 61 of Manama's total score in yesterday's final. Kuwayed led the way with 23 markers on an efficient eight-for-12 clip from the field, while Nowrooz had 20 points including three three-pointers. Chism had his typical monster game of 18 points, 19 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the win. Jameel finished with just seven points for Manama. Pacing Muharraq in the loss was sweet-shooting guard Ali Abbas who had a game-high 31 points. He was a red hot 12-of-17 from the field while also registering four steals. US import Arnett Moultrie added 22 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. They received little help, however, they were the only two Muharraq players in double figures. The rest of their top players struggled offensively, including Bader Abdulla Malabes who had just eight points, Mohammed Buallay who had five, Ali Shukrallah who had two points and Mohammed Juma'a who finished scoreless. Muharraq had to settle for the runner-up medals, although they did well to fight back in the game and make the end interesting as they cut a 15-point fourth quarter deficit to just one prior to Jameel's final two free-throws. Kuwayed also came up big for Manama in the final 26 seconds of the game. He made three free-throws over two possessions to help keep his team in front. Manama stared the final period with a commanding 65-50 lead. They were earlier ahead 43-34 at the half after starting things off with a 25-15 edge in the first quarter. Manama clinch Super Cup title - Aug 31, 2017
Defending league champions Manama clinched the Bahrain Basketball Super Cup title defeating Muharraq 90-81 after extra time at the Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) Sports Hall in Um Al Hassam last night. The full time ended 74-74. The quarters scores were 17-10 (Muharraq), 25-15 (Manama), 27-18 (Muharraq), 21-15 (Manama) and 16-7 (Manama). It was a thrilling match between last season's league and cup champions, with a large crowd witnessing the clash. Manama were in better form and showed more calm and focus in the last moments of the match, while Muharraq looked a disturbed lot in the extra-time quarter, being upset with some of the decisions by the referees. Manama's top scorer was Hassan Nowrooz with 23 points, including three three-pointer shots. He was well-supported by American Wayne Chism (206-PF-87, college: Tennessee) with 19 points, Ahmed Aziz (15), Mohammed Qurban (12) and Ahmed Najaf (11). Muharraq's top scorers were Mohammad Hassan Al Derazi, who claimed 18 points, Australian Aleksandar Maric (211-C-84, college: Nebraska) with 15 points and Ali Abbas (12 points). BBA president Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa presented gold medals and the Super Cup trophy to Manama team and the silver medals to Muharraq players. Present were Bahrain Olympic Committee general secretary Abdulrahman Sadiq Askar and other officials from both clubs and sponsors. Prior to the match, Shaikh Isa revealed the new logo of the association. He also launched an application which will contain the results of all BBA matches of all categories, along with their stats.
