Round 2: Leader WM Dragons lose to Mono Vampire

There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Regular Season in ASEAN League. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Malaysian WM Dragons (1-1) in Bangkok on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by Thailand Mono Vampire (3-0) 79-73. Strangely WM Dragons outrebounded Mono Vampire 44-32 including 35 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was American forward Michael Singletary (198-88, college: Texas Tech) who had a double-double by scoring 28 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. American-Thailand guard Tyler Lamb (196-91, college: LBSU) chipped in 15 points and 5 assists. Mono Vampire's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American power forward Will Artino (211-92, college: Creighton) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists for the guests. Mono Vampire will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. WM Dragons will play against Zhuhai (#10) and are hoping to prove to their fans that the loss was just an accident.
An exciting game was played in . Taiwanese Fubon Braves faced Chinese Macau. Host Fubon Braves (3-1) defeated guests from Macau (3-2) 106-93. Costa Rican-Belizean forward Charles Garcia (208-88, college: Seattle) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Sim Bhullar contributed with 21 points and 10 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Fubon Braves' coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American swingman Kenny Manigault (196-91, college: Pikeville) replied with 31 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for Macau. Fubon Braves will play against Zhuhai (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Macau will play against Hong Kong ELL (#9) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in Changhua City was also quite interesting. Chinese Macau (3-2) played at the court of Taiwanese Formosa D. (0-2). Macau managed to secure a 6-point victory 91-85 on Sunday. Mikh McKinney had a double-double by scoring 28 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the charge for the winners. Marcus Keene responded with a triple-double by scoring 28 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. Macau will meet at home Hong Kong ELL (#9) in the next round where they are favorite. Formosa D. will play against Zhuhai and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 2 bottom-ranked Alab Pilipinas defeated Zhuhai in Manila 114-110. Fubon Braves beat Hong Kong ELL at home 102-89.



Hong Kong ELL - Macau 79-93

The game with biggest result difference took place in Hong Kong. Local Hong Kong ELL (0-2) lost to Chinese Macau (3-2) 93-79. Macau forced 22 Hong Kong ELL turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. American-Filipino guard Mikh McKinney (184-92, college: Sacramento St.) notched 26 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort and American forward Brandon Edwards (198-91, college: UT Arlington) supported him with 25 points and 11 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Four Macau players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 31 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists (was perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line !!!) by American point guard Trey Kell (193-96, college: San Diego St., agency: Slash Sports) did not help to save the game for Hong Kong ELL. His fellow American import guard TJ Price (193-93, college: WKU) added 18 points and 7 rebounds for the hosts. Hong Kong ELL's coach rotated ten players and allowed the starting five to rest. Macau's next round opponent will be Formosa D. (#8) in Changhua City where they are favorite. Hong Kong ELL will play again on the road against Macau and hope to win that game.

Zhuhai - Alab Pilipinas 110-114

But Zhuhai was not able to use a home court advantage and was defeated by the opponent from Manila 114-110. Alab Pilipinas players were unselfish on offense dishing 35 assists. The game was dominated by American players. Guard Khalif Wyatt (193-91, college: Temple, agency: Alti Sport) notched 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort and forward Nick King (201-95, college: MTSU) supported him with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Even a double-double of 38 points (!!!) and 17 rebounds by forward Julian Boyd (201-90, college: LIU Brooklyn) did not help to save the game for Zhuhai. Guard Douglas Herring-Jr (191-87, college: Utica) added 19 points, 6 rebounds, 16 assists and 6 steals for the hosts. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Alab Pilipinas' next round opponent will be Singapore Slingers (#7) at home. Zhuhai will play against Formosa D. and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

No shocking result in a game when Taiwanese Fubon Braves (3-1) defeated at home Hong Kong Hong Kong ELL (0-2) 102-89. Fubon Braves players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. American guard OJ Mayo (193-87, college: USC) notched 27 points and 4 assists to lead the effort and Indian-Canadian center Sim Bhullar (226-92, college: N.Mexico St.) supported him with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Five Fubon Braves players scored in double figures. Even 37 points (!!!), 7 rebounds and 4 assists by American point guard Trey Kell (193-96, college: San Diego St., agency: Slash Sports) did not help to save the game for Hong Kong ELL. His fellow American import center Michael Holyfield (211-92, college: SHSU) added 16 points and 15 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Fubon Braves' next round opponent will be Zhuhai (#10) and are hoping to win another game. Hong Kong ELL will play against Macau and hope to win that game.

The game in Changhua City was also quite interesting. Chinese Macau (3-2) played at the court of Taiwanese Formosa D. (0-2). Macau managed to secure a 6-point victory 91-85 on Sunday. Macau dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Formosa D.'s 32 and made 16-of-18 free shots (88.9 percent) during the game. Macau forced 22 Formosa D. turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American-Filipino guard Mikh McKinney (184-92, college: Sacramento St.) had a double-double by scoring 28 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American forward Brandon Edwards (198-91, college: UT Arlington) chipped in 22 points and 10 rebounds during the contest. American point guard Marcus Keene (180-95, college: Cent Michigan) responded with a triple-double by scoring 28 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists and his fellow American import guard Jerran Young (198-91, college: Wright St.) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. Four Formosa D. players scored in double figures. Macau will meet at home Hong Kong ELL (#9) in the next round where they are favorite.
