The group of 38 players, including coaches, assistants and committee members, visited two venues at the invitation of Chinese players. The players were met by their counterparts in Shenzhen and Zhu Hai in Kwang Tung province. After a friendly match, the Chinese team hosted their Malaysian guests to a meal.
Association chairman Ranndy Yap Kin Heng said the initiative came about after the Kuantan players triumphed over other districts in the state over the past five years. He said some Chinese officials and players, who were their friends, extended an invitation to the players.
'I had a discussion with the other committee members and they agreed to take up the offer.
'All the players felt it was a good opportunity to learn and interact with Chinese players,' he said, adding that the team forked out their own money, with the association chipping in a token amount.
Yap said the five-day four-night trip was rewarding. 'Our players learnt skills from the Chinese who were a class above.
'We were impressed by their facilities, which were similar to our village in setting, but well maintained,' he said.
Yap said that more friendly matches should be organised to improve the players' skills and foster closer ties.
'We hope the Government will subsidise sports bodies and associations in such trips.
'During the trip, we did out part by promoting places of interest in Malaysia, particularly places in Pahang like Cameron Highlands, Pulau Tioman and Taman Negara,' he said.
He said the trip boosted the morale of the players, who in turn extended an invitation to the Chinese players to make a return visit.
MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines will compete against a familiar figure in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) Champions Cup.
Former Philippine national coach Boysie Zamar will call the shots for Malaysia in the Champions Cup, slated April 3 to 7, where the Philippines is defending the title through four-time PBL champion Harbour Centre.
'I have mixed emotions,' said Zamar. 'Of course, I'm a Filipino. But this is just a job.

'I have mixed emotions,' said Zamar. 'Of course, I'm a Filipino. But this is just a job.'
Zamar said he might tap a Filipino player as a second import of the Malaysian national team, which is already reinforced by 6-foot-4 import Chris Cuete of Cameroon.
'I might get an ex-PBA center,' said Zamar, who also worked in Jakarta in the last two years as head coach of Aspac Putra in the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL).
'Malaysia got me because I'm from the Philippines and I'm familiar with our game. But I can only do so much as a coach.'
Coach Jorge Gallent said the development is another cause for worry for the Harbour five.
'We can't undermine Coach Boysie's skills and the preparation they're doing,' said Gallent.
Yet Zamar believes the Philippines will still dominate the tournament even with Nigerian Sam Ekwe of San Beda College as its only import.
'To be frank, Malaysia will be okay if it finishes No. 2,' said Zamar. 'Our goal is very realistic. We just want to qualify in the Champions Cup and try to beat Indonesia and Thailand.'(Jasmine Payo/PDI)

The hosts kept it close in the starting frame as they trailed by just a single point 21:22. Malaysia however gradually gained speed and looked more confident with every passing minute. The things deemed for Thai team in the second term as well-balanced Malaysia offense capped the first half with some impressive plays and clinched a 45:38 advantage at halftime. The complexion of the game did not change after the intermission as Malaysia kept their opponents at a safe distance. The shots just would not drop for Thailand and moreover they were losing the battle under the rims to deny themselves a chance to get to a striking distance. The hosts scored only 9 points in the third stanza and were behind by 10 points heading into the final period. Finally Piyapong Piroon and Pramoch Jantharaniyom got the home side rolling with a couple of successful plays. Thailand cut the gap but Malaysia came up cool at the dying stages and draining important free throws ensured the winning outcome. Koh Way Tek (194-F/C-83) led the winners with 19 points and 8 boards. Tan Kian Hoong (192-G/F-83) and Kappusamy Satyaseelan scored 11 points apiece for Malaysia. Piyapong Piroon answered with game-high 22 points and 7 boards for Thailand. Chaiwat Kaedum (-C-85) contributed 12 points and 8 boards in a losing clause. Malaysia outmuscled their opponents under the rims pulling down 35 boards. Malaysia will now play against Cambodia on Monday. Thailand will seek for the first victory against Indonesia the same day.

The game was hugely important for the prospects of both teams to advance to the next round of action. Malaysia led by sizzling performance from Koh Way Tek (194-F/C-83) got to a better start and surged ahead in the first quarter. The defense worked hard for Malaysian team as they limited their counterparts to 14 points and enjoyed a narrow 18:14 lead after the starting period. Malaysia continued to dominate this low-scoring affair after the initial intermission. Indonesia obviously struggled to find open shots and was not able to gain the right speed. Malaysia outmuscled their opponents under the rims and held them to just 11 points in the second stanza. The margin grew to 5 points at the interval 30:25. But Fictor Roring managed to recharge his team during the main break. Indonesia came up from the dressing room ready to fight. Amin Prihantono (188-F-82) scored from beyond the arc and the team began finding the right shots from the field. The deficit quickly vanished and the teams entered the fourth period all square at 47. Indonesia finally tuned in and looked unstoppable in the final term. The shots were dropping for them, while Malaysia seemed to have been taken aback and lost the grip. They scored just 8 points in the fourth frame and never looked like winning at the dying minutes. Amin Prihantono topscored with 14 points for Indonesia. Youbel Sondakh (188-F-84) contributed 13 points, while Andrie Ekayana (181-G-82) delivered 11 points for the winners. Koh Way Tek responded with game-high 29 points and 7 boards. Soo Eng Heng (182-G-84) tallied 8 points in a loss. Malaysia will next take on Thailand later tonight. Indonesia will challenge Philippines tomorrow.

Malaysia NT confident of winning SEA gold despite ball change
THE Malaysian men's basketball team only trained with the new official ball of the Korat SEA Games (Mikasa) for the past two days as opposed to their regular Molten ball used in international competitions but are still confident of giving hosts Thailand and Philippines a run for the gold medal.
THE Malaysian men's basketball team only trained with the new official ball of the Korat SEA Games (Mikasa) for the past two days as opposed to their regular Molten ball used in international competitions but are still confident of giving hosts Thailand and Philippines a run for the gold medal.
Men's basketball team manager Chow Chee Khin said although the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) uses the Molten brand ball as the official ball for international competitions, the Korat SEA Games organising committee approved the Mikasa brand for the Games.
“Definitely this will affect our chances of finishing with the gold but we have the confidence and I believe that we can perform well with the new ball,” said Chee Khin.
He added that the Malaysian Amateur Basketball Association (MABA) had encountered difficulties in obtaining the ball, manufactured in Japan, as it is not available in Malaysia.
“We only managed to buy it from Singapore three days ago and used it for training just two days ago. Tomorrow we leave for Korat for the Dec 7-12 competition.
“People might say that all balls are the same.
“It may be true and yet, it's not true. Different brands have different finishing and therefore has a different feel to it.
“So we need to get used to it,” he said, adding that the new ball was different from the previous one in terms of size, quality and hand feel.
He added that Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines are all equally strong in the men's event and it will all depend on the players' performance on the day of competition.
The men's competition here will be held using a round robin format as only five countries are participating - Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia.
In the 2005 Manila SEA Games, basketball was not included as the Philippines was under suspension from FIBA.
