 | Interview with Army Club coach Fikrat Toma | |
|
|
| | |
Fikrat Toma , A guy who gave all his time to serve the Iraqi basketball for more than 20 years, He coached many clubs inside Iraq plus The Iraqi National team for several years, He is our guest today.
Coach Fikrat worked as assistant coach with Iraqi National team from 1982 till 2000, and then National Team coach from 2000 till 2004, and after that he bagan coaching Army Club from 2004 till now.
Q: How do you see the Iraqi Basketball nowadays? Iraqi Basketball is suffering for long years due to the unlimited obsticales and it beared so much and the results for sure was bad, The baskebtall base in the country became so weak and also reflects on the current players' abilites due to their frequenlty absence from trainings and being out from interbational tournament for several years and the stoppage of the current iraqi league due to the financial problems in the country as whole, all that was bad for our basketball. To see the results from the 90's till 2000, we see that the results are not stable but after that we took 3rd in the arab's nations tournament which was held in Egypt in 2002, But when you go to the 80's from last century you will see that our baskebtall were shining in all arab world and even asia. We can be better by refreshing our national team with youth players to mix them with the experienced and that may make our baskebtall better.
Q: Is there resolutions to fix the weakness of the Iraqi Basketball? I think the weakness which came after 2005 pushed the Iraqi federation to apply new system to develop our basketball by depending on youth players and new faces and let them play in the league and local competitions, This system's results are great till now and lets our base of basketball to grow more but the responsibilites here must be shared between clubs and the federation, The clubs also must be active to be part of basketball develpoment, Also the federation must afford to the clubs all the trainings facilities and equipments needed for that, Also there must be basketball courts in all the iraqi regions, This will let the players to practice more and will make the base bigger.
Q: Do you think that applying the proffesionalism now in clubs is important? We need now more than before to apply the professionalism in clubs but in the right way, We need to make our league more stronger by bringging imports to play side by side with our players and that will give them more experience, As you see our neighbours in the region after they applied this system there and how they are now making a nice baskebtall. We need players to be free for basketball only and this is the professionalism.
Q: What do you think about our players who are playing abroad? Did they help the iraqi baskebtall? With all my respects to some of these players, But the rest became more stronger than before after playing in higher levels and thats what they need.
Q: Tell us about Army's club preperations for next season? After the punishment of the iraqi federation to us after we did'nt play in last season's "Nukhba" Tournament, I began to build a new team with youth and small players, We still need some of time to be ready for our next season.
