| | | TWO teams from the professional Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will travel to Brunei Darussalam to take part in this year’s Sultan’s Cup from September 20 to October 1. The teams are recent PBA Fiesta Conference runner-up Red Bull Barako and perennial fan favorite Purefoods TJ Hotdogs.

 | Tigers Claim Third Place Amidst Controversy, 141-107 | |
| | | BANDAR Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam – The SYH Tigers salvaged Third Place at the expense of the CESK L. Mark Lakers, 141-107, in the Third Shell Rimula Ultra Challenge Trophy Friday night (October 24) at the National Indoor Stadium but not before a major controversy that rocked the tournament.
Initially, the Lakers refused to play the game only to take the court after organizers threatened them with a hefty fine. The Lakers surprisingly played below par, prompting observers to believe that it was being done on purpose. The Lakers had come off a tough semifinal loss to the defending champion Suncity Dragons the night before and last night’s sloppy play was probably in protest for the officiating in the said match.
The crowd was composed of mostly Filipino expatriates came to witness their former idols in the Philippine professional league like Bobby Parks, Renato Agustin and Rizaldy Realubit display their wares for the Lakers but were instead made to witness deliberate passing of the ball out of bounds and standing only defense.
The Tigers were also comprised of several Filipino league stars including one-time sharp-shooter Todd Bernard who was absolutely repulsed by what he saw saying it was an insult to professional basketball players worldwide. Bernard’s teammates Victor Pedro Martin, Gilbert Castillo and Bonel Balingit also expressed their disappointment saying that they were ashamed to be called Filipinos and that it was an insult to the entire Tigers organization also.
With the tournament gaining more recognition and attracting more international stars, this latest incident is a big blow to the tournament organizers and according to inside sources, they are considering lifetime bans for all those involved with the team b |
