TAIPEI -- So far this season, Southern Lady Generals forward Chamique Holdsclaw (188-F-77, college: Tennessee) has already returned from a torn right Achilles tendon which ended her 2011 season in the WNBA, but that won't stop her from representing her country this summer.
Holdsclaw was announced on Monday as the captain for the 2013 U.S. National women's basketball team that will compete in Taipei, Taiwan for the Williams Jones Cup.
"I'm looking forward to it," Holdsclaw said after the Generals game Sunday night. "I'm definitely going to be ready to help the ladies go for Gold."
There has never been a team from the USA to win the Williams Jones Cup but the addition of Holdsclaw will change that.
Earlier in the day, Team USA JC General Manager Jared Johnson was confident of Holdsclaw's commitment level when speaking to reporters on a conference call to announce the invitee pool.
"I think Chamique really wants to be apart of this team, depending on injury, that will be her choice but, it would have to be something very, very serious (to keep her out)," Johnson said. "I know she has a number of years still left but I know she would want another Gold metal. She's about championships and we need her. We need her because of that mentality to be one of the leaders of our team."
Team USA JC Basketball chairman Jerone Dodd said that the committee will monitor Holdsclaw's health throughout the WUBA season prior to the team's playoff run in early June. The U.S. has to submit its final 12-man roster by July 20.
"Obviously, she's such a competitor, she would take any role she was asked to take," Dodd said. "In this particular case, Chamique's going to keep us posted and we'll watch her as closely as we can. We don't want to put her in any jeopardy whatsoever, and we won't."
Team USA member Jermaine Barnes (also in the UBA) was thrilled about the prospect of Holdsclaw competing through the summer. "She is the Kobe Bryant (198-SG-78) of womens basketball", said Barnes. It's an honor watching her in the WUBA and it will be an honor watching her bring home the Gold for us.
"When she joined the WUBA we really didn't know what to expect," Barnes said. "You always see someone great on TV growing up but never imagine watching them in the same gym every weekend. None of us are blind to the media and news going on around her but from what I have seen Chamique is all about people. She only care to help and she has my full support in her return to the game.
Holdsclaw told reporters last week that her Achilles was getting stronger, and Johnson said he hadn't heard of any plans for his star to undergo surgery to improve the tendon in the offseason.
"Nobody has said that to me," Johnson said. "An from her stats she looks fine to me."
Holdsclaw join the Southern Generals of the WUBA this spring with signs of her former self as the game continue on. She is currently averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds for the Lady Generals and was selected to the 2013 WUBA All-Star game in Atlanta, GA. This season in the WUBA should prepare Holdsclaw for the summer at hand in Taiwan.
