Barcelona beat Russian CSKA in Euroleague 64:62 in the last round of Top 16 stage allowing the hosts to qualify for the quarterfinals. Ersan Ilyasova (207-F-87) and his Barcelona thus improved to 3-3 record and surpassed Unicaja due to a tie-break point advantage against them. The game turned into a real basketball drama with the teams going hand in hand throughout the encounter. Alex Acker and Gianluca Basile scored 6 straight points to open the game. Fran Vazquez quickly added 4 more points and Barcelona grabbed a 10:0 lead at the start. Matjaz Smodis finally broke the scoring deadlock for CSKA with free throws but Basile immediately reacted with another trey to make it 13:2 for the hosts. Finally CSKA seemed to shake off sloppiness and began paving their way back into contest. Matjaz Smodis, Thomas Van Den Spiegel and Ramunas Siskauskas trimmed the gap 5 points. Khryapa and Trajan Langdon scored 5 more points and CSKA climbed within a single point from Barcelona. Finally Khryapa dropped two free throws and CSKA appeared leading 16:15 after the opening frame. Ramunas Siskauskas stretched the lead as he converted a layup to open the second period. From now on the teams traded baskets and the lead changed hands for a couple of times in the quarter. Lakovic and Viktor Khryapa exchanged trebles late in the term and CSKA secured a 33:32 advantage at halftime.
Trajan Langdon and David Andersen deepened the damage early in the third frame. But Fran Vazquez and Pepe Sanchez tied the score midway through the quarter. Later Jaka Lakovic (186-G-78) scored 6 points in a row to put the hosts up by 5 points 50:45. However CSKA answered with a three-pointer from Trajan Langdon and the teams entered the fourth stanza with Barcelona leading by 2. Ramunas Siskauskas and Papaloukas retained the advantage for CSKA not long into the final term. The teams kept it close before Ersan Ilyasova and Fran Vasquez carried the home side to a 60:55 distance with less than two minutes left. Trajan Langdon fired from downtown to trim the deficit and then converted a free throw to keep the visitors inches away. Basile and Ramunas Siskauskas traded buckets and then Ersan Ilyasova had his say dunking the ball with 7 seconds left for a 64:61 lead. Ramunas Siskauskas got to charity stripe and hit the first free throw. He missed the second one, while Fran Vazquez and Matjaz Smodis received double foul and CSKA remained with the ball. J.R. Holden had a chance to save the game for CSKA but his three-point attempt went off mark bringing Barcelona to the quarterfinal birth.
Jaka Lakovic scored 14 points to pace Barcelona. Gianluca Basile, Fran Vazquez and Ersan Ilyasova netted 8 points apiece for the winners. Ramunas Siskauskas and Viktor Khryapa answered with 13 points apiece for CSKA. Trajan Langdon had 12 points in defeat. Barcelona will now face Maccabi Tel-Aviv at the quarterfinal stage.
