league was established with a name: SBL
SBL
annual award: Lin Chih-jay named regular season MVP - 2007
Yes, I know it's weird, but
the SBL finally announced its annual award Thursday -- FIVE days after
the champion was determined.
And TB forward
Lin Chi-Jay (192-G-82) came up as the big winner. Lin, who had won
Finals MVP less than a week ago, was named regular season MVP as well,
beating out Videoland import Jonathan Sanders in the media voting with a
close score of 96 to 89.
Personally, I would have voted Sanders for my regular season MVP though.
But I also understand very well the "politics" behind the media voting
because most of them always favored local players over imports. It's sad
and no one could do anything about it. Voting is politics, after all.
Not surprisingly, Lin was also on the list of the Best Five, which
recognized a pair of backcourt players and three frontcourt players.
Dacin guard Wang Chih-chun, Yulon guard Lee Hsueh-lin and Sanders were
all named to the best five for the first time.
Yulon center Tsun Wen-din won the defensive player of the year award for
the second consecutive year, while first-year VL head coach Liu Chih-wei
was named coach of the year after leading Videoland to a 21-9 regular
season.
Tsun beat out import Delvin Thomas, who played for ETSN, 92-62 in the
media voting.
Azio forward Chien Jia-hong was recognized as the most improved player
in a lanslide score of 129-21 over Bank of Taiwan forward Hsu Chih-chan.
VL forward/guard Lee Wei-min, who transferred from TB to Videoland last
summer, won the inaugural sixth man of the year award.
Dacin forward Yao Jun-jay was named rookie of the year. It's true that
this is Yao's first year in the league but he was not really a rookie
because he played for Dacin a couple years back in the A-League.

Beer beat Dacin 4-2 to win first SBL title - 2007
A broken play and a lucky
shot gave Taiwan Beer, which almost closed down its basketball team four
years ago, its first champion in team history. You could say, however,
it's destiny.
Chen Shih-nian made a high-arching banked shot as the final buzzer
sounded to help Taiwan Beer upset Dacin 69-68 in Game 6 of the 2007 SBL
Finals Saturday and win the first SBL title in team history, wrapping up
the series 4-2.
Lin Chi-Jay (192-G-82), who had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the
game and averaged for 23.2 points and 8.3 rebounds in the seires, was
named Finals MVP.
Trailing by 11 early in the second half, TB fought back to make it a
tight game before the end of the third quarter, when Dacin led by two,
59-57.
With only 8 seconds to go and TB trailing by one, Taiwan Beer came out
of the final timeout with a play to either let
Lin Chi-Jay operate on his own or pass to Lo Shin-liang, who
stationed at the left baseline. But Lin was never able to find an
opening and Lo couldn't get off a shot with two Dacin defender coming at
his face.
Lo passed the ball to Hsu Hao-cheng, who tried to make a cut. Hsu
fumbled the ball a little bit before passing to Chen Shih-nian at the
top of the key. The rest was history. Chen, who had only 5 points in the
game, made a high-arching banked shot as time expired.
It's been a long way for TB from four years ago, when the state-owned
company considered dropping its basketball team due to the pressure from
the union. The union claimed that the basketball team did not bring any
profit to the company and the company.
And what a change after four years. Last year, TB made it to the Finals
but lost 4-1 to Yulon. Currently, TB is one of the most popular -- if
not the most popular -- teams in the league. And finally, they took home
a championship trophy.
Tien Lei, who has been playing on a broken right thumb since Game 3, was
held to 8 points on 1-of-13 shooting. He also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Dacin, which had a 9-point halftime lead, was led by Chang Chi-feng's 15
points. Lin Yi-huei had 14 while Lee Fong-yong had 12.
Dacin lost for the second time in the SBL Finals. It was swept by Yulon
3-0 in 2005.

Tsun
Wen-Din (203-C-84)'s missed layup at the buzzer as Yulon Dinos beat Taiwan
Beer 74-73 in Game 5 of the 2006 SBL Finals Sunday and completed an
unprecedented three-peat.
Yulon, which won the series 4-1, was still the only champion the SBL has ever
known. It beat Sina 3-0 in the 2004 SBL Finals and swept Dacin 3-0 in the 2005
SBL Finals. Tsun
Wen-Din (203-C-84), the 6-8 center who averaged 20 points and 9.8 rebounds
in five games, was voted Finals Most Valuable Player for the second straight
year.
Taiwan Beer had trailed for almost the entire game but took the lead in the last
minute after Shan Wei-fan made two free-throws and made the score 73-72. It
looked like Taiwan Beer would extend the series to the next week.
With 6.0 seconds left, Yulon had the final shot.
Tsun
Wen-Din (203-C-84) received the inbound pass at the top of the key and took
the ball to the basket. The ball bounced off the rim but
Chou
Hong Yu (195-F-76), who was left alone under the basket as his defender
switched off to double Tsun, tipped in a bankshot as the final buzzer sounded. Game 5: Yulon 74-73 TB (Half 43-33)

(Taipei, Taiwan ¡V May 16) In a hard-fought
series where no victory came easy, Yulon still swept Dacin 3-0 to repeat as
SBL champion. Yulon beat Dacin 92-84 last night in Game 3 of the 2004-05 SBL
Finals to become the first repeat champion in the league's short two-year
history.

Tsun Wen
Din (203-C-84) had 27 points and 8 rebounds and was

2005 SBL All-Star Game
With all five starters scoring in double figures, White Team beat Red Team
96-89 in the annual SBL All-Star Game last night at Taipei Physical
Education College Gymnasium. But Lo Shin-liang, who is on Red Team,
surprisingly got the nod as MVP with his 17 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists
and 3 steals versatile performance.
Lo Shin-liang also won the MVP honor in the All-Star Game last year.
Tien Lei won the Dunk contest with his creativity, taking his jersey and
pant off in successive dunks. Sina's rookie Chang Yu-lin finished second.
Videoland's rookie Wu Cheng-yu surprisingly won the Three-point Shootout.
Before the All-Star Game, Legends beat Rookies 71-64 in an exhibition game
that features old-timers and retired NT players like Cheng Chih-lung, Lee
Yun-kwang and Dong-fan Che-der. Cheng Chih-lung, who a couple years ago was
still regarded as one of Asia's finest players, scored 23 points in the
