KBL Round 37: Goyang Orions defeat ET Land Elephants in the closest game of the week - Feb 20, 2017

Seventh-ranked ET Land Elephants (19-23) gave a tough game to third ranked Goyang Orions (27-15) in Inchon on Sunday. The visitors from Daegu managed to secure only two-point victory 85-83. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 27-17. But ET Land Elephants won second period 24-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American forward Aaron Haynes (201-81, college: Boise St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and international center Seung-Hyun Lee (201-92) chipped in 16 points. At the losing side U.S. Virgin Islands forward Victor Cuthbert (197-83, college: Murray St.) responded with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Defending champion maintains third place with 27-15 record having just two points less than leader Anyang KGC. ET Land Elephants at the other side keep the seventh position with 23 games lost. Goyang Orions are looking forward to face SK Knights (#8) in Seoul in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. ET Land Elephants will play at home against LG Sakers and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Visiting Goyang Orions were defeated by Sonic Boom KT in a tough game in Busan 74-79. International point guard Jae-Do Lee (180-91) nailed a double-double by scoring 10 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists for the winning side and Leon Williams accounted for 12 points and 9 rebounds. International center Seung-Hyun Lee (201-92) came up with 17 points and 6 rebounds for Goyang Orions in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Sonic Boom KT maintains tenth place with 12-29 record. Defending champion Goyang Orions keep the third position with 15 games lost. Sonic Boom KT will play against higher ranked SK Knights (#8) in Seoul in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Goyang Orions will play at home against SK Knights (#8) and hope to get back on the winning track.

Visiting Samsung Thunders were defeated by LG Sakers in a tough game in Changwon 80-85. James Mays fired a double-double by scoring 19 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. Ricardo Ratliffe produced a double-double by scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds for lost side. Samsung Thunders' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. LG Sakers maintains sixth place with 19-22 record. Loser Samsung Thunders keep the second position with 14 games lost. LG Sakers will meet ET Land Elephants (#7) in the next round. Samsung Thunders will have a break next round.

Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Anyang KGC have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 29-13 record. LG Sakers at the other side keep the sixth position with 22 games lost. Anyang KGC's next round opponent will be KCC Egis (#9) in Jeonju and are hoping to win another game. LG Sakers will play on the road against ET Land Elephants in Inchon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 37: bottom-ranked Sonic Boom KT lost to Samsung Th. on the opponent's court 85-90. Dongbu Promy managed to outperform KCC Egis in a home game 86-79. Mobis Phoebus were rolled over ET Land on the road 78-59.

Samsung Th. - Sonic Boom KT 90-85

Very expected game in Seoul where 10th ranked Sonic Boom KT (12-29) was defeated by second ranked Samsung Thunders (28-14) 90-85 on Sunday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Sonic Boom KT won third quarter 29-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Samsung Thunders shot 23 for 33 from the free-throw line, while Sonic Boom KT only scored seven points from the stripe. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Sonic Boom KT was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. The former international forward Ricardo Ratliffe (203-89, college: Missouri) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and American swingman Michael Craig (196-91, college: S.Mississippi) chipped in 19 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. At the losing side international point guard Jae-Do Lee (180-91) responded with 22 points and 7 assists and American power forward Leon Williams (203-86, college: Ohio) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds. KCC Egis trailed by 13 points after 3 quarters before a 20-14 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 79-86 at the end of the game. Dongbu Promy made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. International guard Ung Heo (183-93) stepped up and scored 25 points and 8 assists for the winners and American power forward Rodrique Benson (207-84, college: California) chipped in 18 points and 13 rebounds. Four Dongbu Promy players scored in double figures. At the losing side American forward Andre Emmett (196-82, college: Texas Tech) responded with 36 points (!!!), 9 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import power forward Ira Clark (203-75, college: Texas, agency: Stealth Sport) scored 12 points and 7 rebounds.
