KBL Round 23: Anyang KGC defeats leader SK Knights - Jan 11, 2013

The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked SK Knights (25-6) in Seoul on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by fourth ranked Anyang KGC (15-15) 73-62. It ended at the same time the ten-game winning streak of SK Knights. Forward Jung-Hyun Lee (191-87) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Trinidad and Tobago power forward Kibwe Trim (208-84, college: Sacred Heart, agency: Top Notch Sports) contributed with 16 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winners. American forward Aaron Haynes (201-81, college: Boise St.) answered with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds for SK Knights. SK Knights' coach Mun Kyung Eun rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Anyang KGC maintains fourth place with 15-15 record. SK Knights at the other side still keep top position with six games lost. Anyang KGC are looking forward to face bottom-ranked KCC Egis (#10) in Jeonju in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. SK Knights will have a break next round.
Important game to mention about took place in Ulsan. First ranked SK Knights (25-6) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging second-ranked Mobis Phoebus (21-9) 71-70 in the game for the first place. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Mobis Phoebus. It was a great evening for American forward Aaron Haynes (201-81, college: Boise St.) who led his team to a victory scoring 26 points. Sun-Hyung Kim helped adding 12 points and 7 assists. American forward Ricardo Ratliffe (203-89, college: Missouri) responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 17 rebounds. SK Knights have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. They maintain first place with 25-6 record. Defending champion Mobis Phoebus keep the second position with nine games lost. SK Knights will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Mobis Phoebus will play at home against Dongbu Promy in Wonju and hope to get back on the winning track.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked ET Land Elephants (20-10) against fourth ranked Anyang KGC (15-15) on Wednesday night. Visiting ET Land Elephants were defeated by Anyang KGC in a tough game in Anyang 82-90. It was an exceptional evening for Juan Pattillo who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds. Carlos Powell came up with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for ET Land Elephants in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Anyang KGC maintains fourth place with 15-15 record. Loser ET Land Elephants keep the third position with ten games lost. Anyang KGC will meet bottom-ranked KCC Egis (#10) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. ET Land Elephants will play against Sonic Boom KT (#8) in Busan and hope to secure a win.
The game in Seoul was also worth to mention about. 5th ranked LG Sakers (13-17) played at the court of seventh ranked Samsung Thunders (13-16). Samsung Thunders managed to secure a 9-point victory 92-83. The best player for the winners was Darian Townes who had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 14 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Samsung Thunders moved-up to fifth place. LG Sakers lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the sixth position with 17 games lost. Samsung Thunders' next round opponent will be Dongbu Promy (#9) in Wonju. LG Sakers will play at home against Goyang Orions in Daegu and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

ET Land Elephants will face Sonic Boom KT (#8) in Busan in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. KCC Egis will play at home against Anyang KGC.

In the last two games of round 23 Goyang Orions beat Sonic Boom KT on the road 74-62. Dongbu Promy won against KCC Egis on its own court 83-74.
The most impressive performance of 23th round was 31 points and 10 rebounds by Jasper Johnson of Sonic Boom KT.

The game between third ranked ET Land Elephants (20-10) and 10th ranked KCC Egis (5-25) in Inchon on Friday ended with biggest points difference. ET Land Elephants outscored guests from Jeonju 97-67. The game was mostly controlled by ET Land Elephants. KCC Egis was better in second period 24-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding KCC Egis to just 3 points in first quarter. ET Land Elephants well out of reach of KCC Egis shooting 71.4 percent from the field. ET Land Elephants had a 26-12 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for ET Land Elephants especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 61.5 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by KCC Egis' players. American players dominated the game. Samsung Thunders managed to secure a 9-point victory 92-83. It was a great shooting night for Samsung Thunders especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 57.9 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. The best player for the winners was American power forward Darian Townes (208-84) who had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Won-Soo Lee (181-83) chipped in 20 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Four Samsung Thunders players scored in double figures. Guard Woo-Sub Yaung (185-85) produced 26 points and 6 assists (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) and center Chang-Moo Song (206-82) added 13 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Samsung Thunders moved-up to fifth place. LG Sakers lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the sixth position with 17 games lost. Samsung Thunders' next round opponent will be Dongbu Promy (#9) in Wonju. There was a small surprise when eighth ranked Goyang Orions (13-17) beat 6th ranked Sonic Boom KT (13-17) in Busan 74-62 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Goyang Orions. Sonic Boom KT was better in second period 18-8. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Goyang Orions looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Belizean-American power forward Leon Williams (203-86, college: Ohio) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 15 rebounds. International power forward Jin-Soo Choi (202-89, college: Maryland) contributed with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks for the winners. American center Jasper Johnson (201-83, college: Delta St.) answered with a double-double by scoring 31 points and 10 rebounds and guard Myung-Jin Kim (177-89) added 7 points and 4 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots) in the effort for Sonic Boom KT. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Goyang Orions moved-up to sixth place, which they share with LG Sakers and Sonic Boom KT. Goyang Orions will face LG Sakers (#6) in Changwon in the next round.

Talk N Text Tropang Texters (PBA) added to their roster 29-year old American swingman Mario Little (198-99kg-87, college: Kansas). He played last season at Anyang KGC in South Korean KBL league.
