KBL Round 22: Sonic Boom KT beats Anyang KGC in the most crucial game of the week - Jan 7, 2013

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Busan. Fourth ranked Sonic Boom KT faced one of their biggest challengers Anyang KGC. Host Sonic Boom KT (13-16) defeated guests from Anyang (13-15) 83-75. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Anyang KGC won third quarter 19-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American center Jasper Johnson (201-83, college: Delta St.) fired a double-double by scoring 32 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. The former international forward Sung-Min Cho (197-83) chipped in 26 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. American forward Juan Pattillo (197-88, college: W.Kentucky) produced a double-double by scoring 31 points and 11 rebounds for lost side. Sonic Boom KT have a solid three-game winning streak. Despite that victory Sonic Boom KT went down to fifth position due to points difference, which they share with LG Sakers. Anyang KGC lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with 15 games lost. Sonic Boom KT is looking forward to face Goyang Orions (#8) in Daegu in the next round. Anyang KGC will play on the road against the league's leader SK Knights (#1) in Seoul and is hoping to win this game.
Leader SK Knights delivered the twentieth fourth victory. This time they crushed 10th ranked KCC Egis (5-23) 80-59 in Jeonju. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of KCC Egis. Worth to mention a great performance of American center Courtney Sims (211-83, college: Michigan, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 5 rebounds. Ki Hoon Byun contributed with 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. SK Knights' coach Mun Kyung Eun felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American power forward Andre Brown (206-81, college: De Paul, agency: Interperformances) replied with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds for KCC Egis. SK Knights (24-5) have an impressive nine-game winning streak. They maintain first position. KCC Egis at the other side stay dead last with 23 lost games. SK Knights will play against Anyang KGC (#4) at home in the next round. KCC Egis will play against ET Land Elephants (#3) in Inchon and hope to get back on the winning track.

LG Sakers lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with 16 games lost. They share the position with Sonic Boom KT. SK Knights will meet at home Anyang KGC (#4) in the next round. LG Sakers will play against Samsung Thunders in Seoul and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 22 Goyang Orions was defeated by Mobis Phoebus in Ulsan 71-53. ET Land beat Samsung Th. at home 68-54.



Mobis Phoebus - Goyang Orions 71-53

There was no surprise in Ulsan where 8th ranked Goyang Orions (12-17) were defeated by second ranked Mobis Phoebus (21-8) 71-53. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Mobis Phoebus's pressure prevailed and they won that period 26-10 extending their advantage to 18 points. Mobis Phoebus outrebounded Goyang Orions 38-24 including a 24-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. American forward Ricardo Ratliffe (203-89, college: Missouri) notched a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the effort and naturalized American forward Gregory Stevenson (198-78, college: Richmond) supported him with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Four Mobis Phoebus players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds by Belizean-American power forward Leon Williams (203-86, college: Ohio) did not help to save the game for Goyang Orions. Naturalized American guard Tony Akins (180-80, college: Georgia Tech, agency: Court Side) added 13 points for lost side. Mobis Phoebus have an impressive five-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position with 21-8 record having just three points less than leader SK Knights. Goyang Orions lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with 17 games lost. Mobis Phoebus' next round opponent will be league's leader SK Knights in Seoul and it will be for sure the game of the week. Goyang Orions will play on the road against Sonic Boom KT (#6) in Busan and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

It was a great shooting night for SK Knights especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 72.7 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of American center Courtney Sims (211-83, college: Michigan, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 5 rebounds. No shocking result in a game in Inchon where third ranked ET Land Elephants (19-9) defeated 7th ranked Samsung Thunders (12-16) 68-54. ET Land Elephants players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. American forward Carlos Powell (199-83, college: S.Carolina) notched 20 points and 5 rebounds to lead the effort and guard Byung-Kook Chung (185-84) supported him with 16 points. Even a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds by American power forward Darian Townes (208-84) did not help to save the game for Samsung Thunders. The former international forward Daniel Sandrin (200-80, college: Seattle Pacific) added 8 points and 7 rebounds for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. ET Land Elephants maintains third position with 19-9 record having six points less than leader SK Knights. Samsung Thunders lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with 16 games lost. Talk N Text Tropang Texters (PBA) added to their roster 29-year old American swingman Mario Little (198-99kg-87, college: Kansas). He played last season at Anyang KGC in South Korean KBL league.
