KBL Round 18: ET Land Elephants are upset by LG Sakers - Dec 25, 2012

The most important game in the last round took place in Inchon between second ranked ET Land Elephants (16-7) and fifth ranked LG Sakers (12-12) on Sunday night. ET Land Elephants were defeated by LG Sakers in a tough game at home 64-70. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of ET Land Elephants. The guests trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 25-15 charge, which allowed them to win the game. The best player for the winners was American power forward Rodrique Benson (207-84, college: California) who scored 13 points and 8 rebounds. Kim Young Hwan chipped in 12 points. At the other side the best for losing team was international forward Tae-Jong Moon (199-75, college: Richmond, agency: Alti Sport) who recorded 23 points and 9 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. LG Sakers maintains fifth position with 12-12 record, which they share with Samsung Th. ET Land Elephants at the other side keep the second place with seven games lost. They share the position with Mobis Phoebus. LG Sakers is looking forward to face higher ranked Anyang KGC (#4) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. ET Land Elephants will play against Dongbu Promy in Wonju and are hoping to win this game.
Another exciting game was between eighth ranked Goyang Orions and higher ranked Anyang KGC where Goyang Orions (10-13) won against Anyang KGC (13-10) on the road with 17-point difference 90-73. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Anyang KGC. It was a good game for Belizean-American power forward Leon Williams (203-86, college: Ohio) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jin-Soo Choi contributed with 16 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Goyang Orions' coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Trinidad and Tobago power forward Kibwe Trim (208-84, college: Sacred Heart, agency: Top Notch Sports) replied with 22 points and 8 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for Anyang KGC. Goyang Orions moved-up to seventh place. Anyang KGC at the other side keeps the fourth position with ten games lost. Goyang Orions will play against league's leader SK Knights in Seoul in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Anyang KGC will play at home against LG Sakers in Changwon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Loser Sonic Boom KT dropped to the eighth place with 14 games lost. SK Knights will meet at home Goyang Orions (#7) in the next round where they are favorite. Sonic Boom KT will play against KCC Egis in Jeonju and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There was no surprise in Seoul where 10th ranked KCC Egis (3-21) were defeated by sixth ranked Samsung Thunders (12-12) 69-61. It looked good early as KCC Egis took an 3-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Samsung Thunders had a 21-17 second period charge getting the lead and KCC Egis were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 61-69. Samsung Thunders made 16-of-19 charity shots (84.2 percent) during the game. American power forward Darian Townes (208-84) notched a double-double by scoring 21 points and 19 rebounds to lead the effort and guard Byoung_woo Park (186-89) supported him with 10 points and 5 assists. Samsung Thunders' coach Dong Kwang Kim used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Even 22 points and 9 rebounds by American center Courtney Sims (211-83, college: Michigan, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) did not help to save the game for KCC Egis. Guard Tae-Hyeong Kim (185-88) added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Samsung Thunders moved-up to fifth place, which they share with LG Sakers. KCC Egis lost sixth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 21 lost games. Samsung Thunders' next round opponent will be higher ranked Mobis Phoebus (#3) in Ulsan and it may be quite challenging game. We should mention about the upset which took place in Changwon, where higher ranked LG Sakers (12-12) lost at home to ninth ranked Dongbu Promy (7-17) 52-65. The game was mostly controlled by Dongbu Promy. LG Sakers was better in third quarter 16-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding LG Sakers to just 7 points in first quarter. It was a great shooting night for Dongbu Promy especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 53.3 percentage. International power forward Eric Sandrin (206-78, college: Seattle Pacific) notched 15 points and 6 rebounds to lead the effort and swingman Kwang-Jae Lee (188-84) supported him with 17 points. KCC Egis (KBL) signed 29-year old American forward Leo Lyons (206-115kg-87, college: Missouri). He played this summer at Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican BSN league, but left the team in March. In three games he had 5.7ppg, 3.7rpg, 2.0apg and 1.3spg. The last season Lyons played at Mobis Phoebus where in 5 KBL games he recorded very impressive stats: 20.0ppg, 8.6rpg, 2.6apg, 1.2spg and 1.0bpg.
