KBL Round 9: ET Land Elephants and SK Knights are with 9-2 records on top - Nov 9, 2012

There were just 9 rounds played in Regular Season of KBL and we can clearly see which teams will fight for top positions and which will try to avoid bottom places. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with extra overtimes and favorites losing the games.

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked ET Land Elephants as it allowed them to take a leadership position. ET Land Elephants edged 8th ranked Dongbu Promy in Inchon 82-79. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Dongbu Promy. Dongbu Promy was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 26-22 charge of ET Land Elephants, which allowed them to win the game. It was a good game for guard Hyuk Kang (188-76) who led his team to a victory with 23 points (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). American forward Carlos Powell (199-83, college: S.Carolina) contributed with 21 points for the winners. The former international power forward Joo-Sung Kim (205-79) answered with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field) for Dongbu Promy. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. ET Land Elephants have a solid series of three victories in a row. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with SK Knights. Dongbu Promy at the other side dropped to the ninth place with eight games lost. Dongbu Promy will play next round against strong Mobis Phoebus trying to get back on the winning streak. ET Land Elephants will try to continue on its current victory against seventh ranked Sonic Boom KT in Busan.
An interesting game for ET Land Elephants (9-2) which hosted in Inchon 3rd placed Goyang Orions (6-5). Second ranked ET Land Elephants managed to get a 8-point victory 78-70. American forward Carlos Powell (199-83, college: S.Carolina) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and Tae-Jong Moon chipped in 13 points. The best for the losing side was naturalized American guard Tony Akins (180-80, college: Georgia Tech, agency: Court Side) with 17 points and 7 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. ET Land Elephants have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with SK Knights. Goyang Orions at the other side dropped to the fourth place with five games lost. They share the position with Anyang KGC. ET Land Elephants will play against Sonic Boom KT (#7) in Busan in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Goyang Orions will play at home against Anyang KGC and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
KBL top team - SK Knights (9-2) had no problems winning another game on Wednesday. This time they crushed tenth ranked KCC Egis (1-11) in Seoul 80-54. Aaron Haynes nailed 16 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side. Courtney Sims came up with 20 points and 5 rebounds for KCC Egis in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. SK Knights have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 9-2 record, which they share with ET Land. KCC Egis lost eighth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 11 games lost. SK Knights will meet at home Mobis Phoebus (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. KCC Egis will play against LG Sakers (#8) in Changwon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Anyang KGC (6-5) and LG Sakers (4-6), which took place in Anyang. 4th placed Anyang KGC was outleveled at home by ninth ranked LG Sakers 86-61 on Thursday. It was a good game for Woo-Sub Yaung who led his team to a victory with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. LG Sakers moved-up to eighth place. Anyang KGC lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with five games lost. LG Sakers will face bottom-ranked KCC Egis (#10) in Jeonju in the next round. Anyang KGC will play on the road against Goyang Orions (#4) in Daegu and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 9 Samsung Th. was beaten by Mobis Phoebus on the road 77-60. Dongbu Promy won against Sonic Boom KT on its own court 83-71.


Sonic Boom KT - KCC Egis 91-85 OT

Tenth-ranked KCC Egis (1-11) were very close to win a game against ninth ranked Sonic Boom KT (5-7) in Busan. Sonic Boom KT managed to secure only six-point victory 91-85. However their fans expected easier game. KCC Egis were ahead by 3 points at the halftime before a 22-17 third quarter run of Sonic Boom KT. They tied the game at the end of regular time. Then they were better in overtime eventually winning that period 14-8. Sonic Boom KT made 28-of-29 charity shots (96.6 percent) during the game, while KCC Egis only scored twelve points from the stripe. 25 personal fouls committed by KCC Egis helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American center Jasper Johnson (201-83, college: Delta St.) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. American power forward Rodrique Benson (207-84, college: California) contributed with 8 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Four LG Sakers players scored in double figures. Forward Il-Du Kim (197-82) answered with 14 points and American forward Juan Pattillo (197-88, college: W.Kentucky) added 10 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Anyang KGC. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. LG Sakers moved-up to eighth place. No shocking result in a game when third ranked Mobis Phoebus (7-4) beat 6th ranked Samsung Thunders (5-6) in Ulsan 77-60 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Mobis Phoebus. Samsung Thunders was better in second period 19-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a good game for guard Si Rae Kim (180-89) who led his team to a victory with 21 points and 4 assists. Naturalized American forward Gregory Stevenson (198-78, college: Richmond) contributed with 18 points for the winners. American power forward Darian Townes (208-84) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds and the former international forward Daniel Sandrin (200-80, college: Seattle Pacific) added 8 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Samsung Thunders. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion maintains third place with 7-4 record having just two points less than leader ET Land. Loser Samsung Thunders keep the sixth position with six games lost. Mobis Phoebus will face league's second-placed SK Knights in Seoul in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Samsung Thunders will play on the road against LG Sakers (#8) in Changwon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 9th ranked Sonic Boom KT's (5-7) road loss to eighth ranked Dongbu Promy (4-8) in Wonju 71-83 on Tuesday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 15-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 83-71. Strangely Sonic Boom KT outrebounded Dongbu Promy 39-22 including 24 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for German-American forward Julian Sensley (206-82, college: Hawaii) who led his team to a victory with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. International power forward Eric Sandrin (206-78, college: Seattle Pacific) contributed with 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. American forward Bryan Davis (206-86, college: Texas A&M, agency: N.E.T.) answered with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds and forward Yeo Kwon Yoon (186-84) added 13 points in the effort for Sonic Boom KT.
