KBL Round 8: Mobis Phoebus are upset by Sonic Boom KT - Nov 4, 2012

It's still too early stage of the Regular Season in KBL, but even now we can clearly see the differece between stronger teams and outsiders.

The most important game in the last round took place in Busan between third ranked Mobis Phoebus (6-4) and seventh ranked Sonic Boom KT (4-6) on Sunday night. Mobis Phoebus were defeated by Sonic Boom KT in a tough game on the road 73-80. Mobis Phoebus trailed by 13 points after 3 quarters before a 21-15 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 73-80 at the end of the game. The best player for the winners was American center Jasper Johnson (201-83, college: Delta St.) who scored 29 points and 9 rebounds. Forward Do-Soo Kim (193-81) chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds. Naturalized American forward Gregory Stevenson (198-78, college: Richmond) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 12 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sonic Boom KT have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain seventh position with 4-6 record. Defending champion Mobis Phoebus keep the third place with four games lost. They share the position with Goyang Orions and Anyang KGC. Sonic Boom KT are looking forward to face bottom-ranked KCC Egis (#10) in Jeonju in the next round. Mobis Phoebus will play at home against Samsung Thunders (#6) in Seoul and are hoping to win this game.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Goyang Orions (6-4) against ninth ranked Dongbu Promy (3-7) on Saturday night. Visiting Goyang Orions were crushed by Dongbu Promy in Wonju 89-68. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Goyang Orions. International power forward Eric Sandrin (206-78, college: Seattle Pacific) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Julian Sensley contributed with 16 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Forward Min-Seup Kim (195-88) replied with 12 points and 8 rebounds for Goyang Orions. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Dongbu Promy maintains ninth position with 3-7 record. Goyang Orions at the other side keep the third place with four games lost. They share the position with Mobis Phoebus and Anyang KGC. Dongbu Promy will play against league's second-placed ET Land Elephants in Inchon in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Goyang Orions will play on the road against the league's second-placed ET Land Elephants and will have a slim chance for a victory.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Anyang. Second ranked SK Knights faced 4th ranked Anyang KGC. Guests from Seoul (8-2) defeated host Anyang KGC (6-4) 73-56. Worth to mention a great performance of Aaron Haynes who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 30 points and 15 rebounds. Tae-Sool Kim responded with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. SK Knights have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Loser Anyang KGC dropped to the third place with four games lost. They share the position with Goyang Orions and Mobis Phoebus. SK Knights will meet at home bottom-ranked KCC Egis (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Anyang KGC will play against LG Sakers (#8) in Changwon and hope to secure a win.

Rest of the games of round 8 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
bottom-ranked KCC Egis were defeated by Samsung Th. in Seoul 67-53. LG Sakers were beaten by Sonic Boom KT at home 75-88. Samsung Th. lost to ET Land on the opponent's court 78-86.


Anyang KGC - SK Knights 56-73

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Anyang. Second ranked SK Knights faced 4th ranked Anyang KGC. Guests from Seoul (8-2) defeated host Anyang KGC (6-4) 73-56. The game was mostly controlled by SK Knights. Anyang KGC managed to win second period 26-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Anyang KGC to just 7 points in fourth quarter. SK Knights dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Anyang KGC's 36. They outrebounded Anyang KGC 48-26 including a 33-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Aaron Haynes (201-81, college: Boise St.) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 30 points and 15 rebounds and forward Bu Kyung Choi (200-89) who added 14 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. International point guard Tae-Sool Kim (180-84) responded with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and American forward Juan Pattillo (197-88, college: W.Kentucky) scored 10 points and 9 rebounds. Four Anyang KGC players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. SK Knights have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Loser Anyang KGC dropped to the third place with four games lost. They share the position with Goyang Orions and Mobis Phoebus. There was no surprise in Seoul where 10th ranked KCC Egis (1-9) were defeated by sixth ranked Samsung Thunders (5-5) 67-53 on Sunday. The hosts trailed by 9 points after first quarter, but they stormed back and won the game by 14 points. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international forward Daniel Sandrin (200-80, college: Seattle Pacific) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 8 rebounds and American forward Brandon Bowman (204-84, college: Georgetown) who added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. American power forward Andre Brown (206-81, college: De Paul, agency: Interperformances) responded with 12 points and 9 rebounds and his fellow American import center Courtney Sims (211-83, college: Michigan, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) scored 10 points and 8 rebounds. Samsung Thunders maintains sixth position with 5-5 record. KCC Egis lost sixth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with nine games lost. Samsung Thunders will meet higher ranked Mobis Phoebus (#4) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. KCC Egis will play against Sonic Boom KT (#7) in Busan.

Very important is a road loss of third ranked Goyang Orions (6-4) against ninth ranked Dongbu Promy (3-7) on Saturday night. Visiting Goyang Orions were crushed by Dongbu Promy in Wonju 89-68. There was a small surprise in Changwon where seventh ranked Sonic Boom KT (4-6) defeated 7th ranked LG Sakers (3-6) 88-75 on Saturday. The game without a history. Sonic Boom KT led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 19-of-20 free shots (95.0 percent) during the game. It was a great shooting night for Sonic Boom KT especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 56.3 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international forward Sung-Min Cho (197-83) who helped to win the game recording 17 points and 6 rebounds and American center Jasper Johnson (201-83, college: Delta St.) who added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. Five Sonic Boom KT players scored in double figures. American power forward Ira Clark (203-75, college: Texas) responded with 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and his fellow American import power forward Rodrique Benson (207-84, college: California) scored 6 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
