The Merlion Cup will be returning to these shores after a 20-year hiatus, said the Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS) on Thursday (Jul 28). Six teams will be competing in the competition, which will take place from Sep 21 to Sep 25 at the OCBC Arena, the BAS added. The teams are: Singapore Slingers, Shanghai Sharks (China), Samsung Thunders (South Korea), Mighty Sports (Philippines), Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor (Taiwan), Malaysia Dragons (Malaysia). According to the BAS' Honorary Secretary, Mr Ong Swee Teck, the negotiation process was the challenging part. "We make sure that these clubs are some of the top tier in Asia and the region. That was the sole criteria. The selection was easy, but the discussion with the different teams was a bit tough," said Mr Ong. "We depend a lot on networking. After that, we go about talking with each of the clubs individually to engage them, to explain the golden moments of the Merlion Cup."
