It might be only his second day on the job, but Singapore's new basketball national coach Frank Arsego is clear about his target for the national team with the SEA Games just over a year away. After a 34-year medal drought, the men's team, under previous coach Neo Beng Siang, clinched back-to-back bronzes at the SEA Games in 2013 and 2015. Another podium finish at next year's KL Games is the minimum, said Arsego, who was officially introduced to the media on Tuesday. He was also optimistic about developing a team that could challenge regional powerhouses Thailand and the Philippines. He said: "My short term goal is put together a team to maintain that ranking. But, as we get closer, I'm going to try and put the things in place to reach the next level... find some more guys to want that responsibility to take that next step. "That's what I'm looking for." The Australian will also double up as the Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS) technical director. He began his two-year contract on Monday. He was previously the Singapore Slingers head coach from 2009 to 2010. The Slingers, led by Neo, are Singapore's first and only professional outfit and is made up of mostly national players. Acknowledging that he has limited time, Arsego said he will focus on four main areas - the national team programme, supporting the women's team, coach education and accelerating the development of youth players. He said: " (The challenges ahead) is part of the excitement... I am really committed to leave something here that would be sustainable."

Westports Malaysia Dragons missed out another season this year to reclaim the Straits Cup from the Singapore Slingers, losing a challenging double overtime game by a razor-thin point, 90-89.
