Al Sadd beat Al Arabi to notch 4th straight win

A fierce battle for league leadership it was and the taller and heftier Al Sadd prevailed, 71-60 over an undermanned but fighting Al Arabi in the main game last night of the Qatar Mens League at the Al Rayyan Indoor Arena.

Al Sadd put on the pressure on their foes at the onset, preventing Abdulai Jalloh (188-G-86, college: JMU) and Al Arabis offense to get going while scoring unmolested in transition to come out far ahead, 40-25, after 20 minutes of play.

The Emir Cup champions kept the tempo after the break and even as Arabis big men brought the fight back in the shaded area, still managed to pull farther away at 61-43 at the end of the third period.

Jalloh spearheaded an 11-0 burst early in the fourth canto to inch closer, 54-61, but Michael Benjamin Southalls dominating presence carried Al Sadd back to a comfortable margin at 67-54, 3:30 left in the game.

Chris dela Rosa led Al Sadd with 15, followed by Khaled Suliman with 14, Southall 12 and Daoud Mousa 10. Jalloh Abdullah finished with 26 points for Arabi.

In the first game, El Jaish trounced Al Shamal, 74-63, for their third victory against a lone defeat which placed them in a tie with Al Arabi in the team standings.

Newcomers Shamal, coming off an ego-boosting win versus Al Wakrah late last week courtesy of latest addition Mezie Nwigwe, was explosive in the early going and kept Army on their toes in the first quarter at 17-16, and at 37-all at halftime.

But El Jaish entered the third period blazing and soared to an early 48-40 lead before pegging a 58-48 advantage.

Nwigwe, who had already had 21 points by then, tried to rally his team back in the final period with relentless defense but Mohammad Baker and his gang countered with more ferocity on the offensive end to preserve the win and deal the northerners their third loss.

Baker topscored for Jaish with 23 points while Shamals Nwigwe finished with 25.

The league goes back to its home at Al Gharafa Sports Centre on Friday and will feature matches between Al Wakrah and El Jaish at 4:00 pm and Rayyan versus Al Ahli in the 8:00 pm main game. A match between Filipino ball clubs under the Pinoy Basketball Qatar (PBAQ) League will also be played in between the QML games as a sidelight.
