William Byrd
Al Arabi edge Gharafa

Al Arabi extricated themselves from a 57-all deadlock in the last three minutes and banked on the heroics of William Byrd (201-G/F-85, college: Ark.-Pine Bluff) in the endgame to mastermind a 65-64 split win over Al Gharafa in the main game last night of the Qatar Mens League at the Al Rayyan Indoor Arena.

Before the logjam, Byrd pulled his team back from a 45-55 deficit igniting a 12-2 run capped by long bomber by Mohammad Jalloh 3:50 into the final buzzer.

Arabi led the half at 36-29 but fell into early foul trouble. Coach Kouusay Hatem then mounted a running offensive after the break that enabled his team to wrest the lead 47- 43 at the end of the third quarter.

Arabi thus joined Al Sadd at the top of the standings with 3-0 win-loss card. Gharafa dropped to 1-2.

Meanwhile, Al Sadd banked on a 21-point cushion after three quarters and cashed in on penalty foul shots in the dying seconds to escape with a precarious 60-55 victory over El Jaish in the first game.

Dela Rosa and company almost saw their sterling 3-quarter hard work go for naught as they allowed their huge advantage slip away in haste as Army threatened, 56-55, going into the last 2 minutes of the game.

The Emir Cup champions dominated the ballgame from the start as Michael Benjamin Southall and Johann Mpondo lorded it over in the inside, combining for 18 of Sadds 37 caroms as against Jaishs 25.

On the other hand, Dela Rosa and Khalid Salman shut the lights out from the outside, scattering 32 points between them. The duo also outplayed their counterparts in other departments with the former getting 6 assists and 6 rebounds, and the latter 7 and 4.

Mohammed Bakir paced the losers with 16 points. Fadi Abilmona managed 9 points on a poor 3/13 shooting clip.

Games resume on Tuesday with Qatar Sports Club battling Al Ahli at 5:00 pm and defending champs Al Rayyan eyeing their third straight win versus Al Wakrah.
