Japan will play for the title at Fiba Asia Cup. The hosts held off Qatar tonight to set up the clash versus Iran for the trophy. Kosuke Takeuchi (206-C/F-85) accounted for 18 points to lead the winners. Qatar will now take on Philippines for the Bronze medals.
The teams got to a slow start. They combined for only 21 points in the opening quarter as Qatar enjoyed a 3-point lead. Japan however turned things around in the second period. They went on a 21:5 run to crown the first half and secured a 30:19 halftime advantage. Japan kept Qatar at safe distance throughout the third term. The hosts ensured a 12-point lead before the fourth frame. Qatar got within 6 points with under two minutes remaining but Hiejima and Takatoshi Furukawa (190-G/F-87) went deadly from the stripe to seal the victory for Japan. Takatoshi Furukawa accounted for 15 points, while J.R. Sakuragi (206-F/C-76, college: UCLA) added 12 points for the winning side. Mohammed Yousef (204-C-82) answered with 22 points, while Erfan Ali (198-PF-83) had 15 points and 13 boards in the loss.

Asociacion Quimsa Santiago del Estero (LigaA) tabbed 28-year old American point guard Reggie Hamilton (182-80kg-89, college: Oakland, agency: SDJ Sports). He started the season at Al Shamal in Qatari D1 league. In 5 games he had very impressive stats: 25.8ppg, 4.2rpg, 5.6apg and 1.8spg this season. The last season Hamilton played at Niigata Albirex (BJ League) in Japan where in 6 games he recorded also remarkable stats: 16.5ppg, 3.3rpg, 5.5apg and 1.3spg. Tadamon Zouk (Pepsi LBL) landed 25-year old Australian-South Sudanese forward Deng Deng (203-98kg-92, college: Baylor). He played recently at Al Shamal in Qatari D1 league. In 5 games he averaged impressive 19.8ppg, 12.2rpg, 2.0apg, 2.8spg and 4.0bpg this season. Deng also played earlier that season for another team Texas Legends in U.S. semi-pro league D-League where in three D1 games he had 4.3ppg and 4.0rpg. For the first time Maciej Lampe (211-C/F-85) has been chosen by asia-basket.com as the Asian MVP for February. Polish international big man had a great month as his team won 7 out of 9 games and advanced to playoffs. Lampe averaged impressive 26.6ppg, 14.4rpg, 3.2apg and 1.0bpg while shooting 2FGP: 62.1%.
