Al
Rayyan crowns with Fifth Emir's Cup
Al
Rayyan lifted the Emir’s Cup basketball for the unprecedented fifth
occasion yesterday when they beat Al Arabi 74-56 in the final played in
front of packed Al Gharafa Stadium this evening.
Al Rayyan, who suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the same
opposition in the final round-robin match, appeared somewhat rusty in
their defence as they trailed Al Arabi by 12 points after first quarter.
But they hardly showed their nerves thereafter as they dominated play
with tight zonal marking while going for attacks on every opportunity.
In the second quarter, quickly eating up Al Arabi lead they went on to
take eight-point lead on their own. And they rarely turned back from
there on to seal the victory.
President of Qatar Basketball Federation Sheikh Saoud bin Ali al-Thani
gave away the prestigious Cup to Al Rayyan players at a function held
after the final.
Al Rayyan team who lost the 26th GCC final game against Al Qadisia of
Kuwait as they were before it the most favoraite for title are now in
rebuilding time with their american coach James Angeli who is trying his
best to reflect the good image of the Qatari Basketball in the region
and the world esspecially after their qualification to world cup in
Japan 2006.
Team Captain Salah Ateeq recived the cup from the emir's cup and the
team started to celebrate on their way.
