Al Gharrafah Club win their first title in club history (Emir Cup)
Al
Rayyan came back from a crushing defeat in the first game, as they
did in the semis, to win the Qatari League Championship. Led by
Tanguy Ngombo (196-F-89),
Erfan Ali Saeed (200-F-83) and
Yasseen Musa (204-F-80),
Al
Rayyan overcame an 0-1 deficit to defend their Qatari League crown.
Rayyan are now undefeated in all competition since losing the league
championship to
Al
Jaysh Army SC in 2007-08. Since then they have been on a tear,
winning 6 straight local competitions, starting with the 07-08 Prince
Cup. They also were the first team to qualify for this year's edition of
the Prince Cup semi-finals. Later that same evening,
As
Sadd Sports Club joined them. Tonight the final 2 spots are up for
grabs.
Al
Jaysh Army SC (1-1) face
Al
Gharrafah (2-0) while
Qatar Sports Club (1-1) face
Al
Ahli Sports Club (0-2). All is still in play in this group, as all
teams still have a hope, even if slim for some, to qualify for the
semis.

Al-Jaysh Crowned Heir Apparent Cup Champions
- Mar 20, 2010
As
they did in 2007-08, Al
Jaysh Army SC put a stop to
Al
Rayyan's 2 year dominance of the Qatari Basketball League.
After taking care of business in the semi-finals against Rayyan, coming
back from a 19 point deficit, to easily defeat them, and with
Al
Gharrafah handily beating
As
Sadd Sports Club, both teams came into the finals high with
confidence. The finals however, was
Al
Jaysh's from start to finish. They came out and picked up a quick
lead that they never gave up, and had
Al
Gharrafah playing catch up the whole game. It did have its exciting
moments though. After
Michael Okpalaeze (198-C) hit an off balance shot with 55 seconds
left, the lead was cut to 2, 66-64, and we were all set for an exciting
final minute. However,
Al
Jaysh came back down the court, and with about 2 seconds left on the
shot clock,
Ali Turki (201-F-82), who was quiet for most of the game after going
for 36 against Rayyan, hit a conscienceless 28 foot 3 pointer to seal
the game. The final score was
Al
Jaysh Army SC 75-64
Al
Gharrafah. Al
Jaysh Army SC was lead by their big men
Babacar Ngom (206-F/C-83) and
Cheikh Sall (208-C-84) who combined for 33 points, while
Michael Okpalaeze lead
Al
Gharrafah with 18 points, while
Omer Abgader Salem (205-C-83) chipped in with 16 in a losing effort.
The league's final cup, The Emir Cup, will get underway on the 27th of
March.
