Sunday gameday saw Alaska book a huge win over Mahindra, while Ginebra was upset by Phoenix in action from the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup.

Game Capsules:

ALASKA ACES over MAHINDRA FLOOD BUSTER, 107-91
The Alaska Aces put together a strong finish as they went on a big closing run to turn away the Mahindra Floodbuster, 107-91, to notch a crucial Oppo PBA PhilippienCup victory on Sunday at the Philsports Arena.

Alaska and Mahindra were tied at 76-all early in the fourth quarter before a 31-13 run by the Aces allowed them to run away with it in the end.

Vic Manuel scored 20 points on 9-for-13 shooting to lead Alaska while Calvin Abueva had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds alongside three blocks for Alaska, which joined what is now a six-team logjam for a share of second place at 5 wins and 4 losses.

JVee Casio added 11 points while RJ Jazul and Kevin Racal each chipped in with nine markers. With the defeat, Mahindra dropped to 2-7 with only two games left on their schedule, eliminating them from contention. (Interaksyon.com)

Lines of the Game:
Calvin Abueva (ALA) - 18pts, 10rebs, 3blks, 1ast, 1stl, 3 triples.
Alex Mallari (MAH) - 23pts, 8asts, 3rebs, 3stls, 1blk.

HIGHLIGHTS:

PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS over BGY. GINEBRA GIN KINGS, 79-73
The Phoenix Fuel Masters placed themselves in strong position in the playoff race after downing Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 79-73, in a crucial Oppo PBA Philippine Cup clash on Sunday at the Philsports Arena.

Phoenix and Ginebra entered the game in a six-way tie for second to seventh places behind only the San Miguel Beermen, which had already clinched the No. 1 spot.

With the win, though, the Fuel Masters improved to 6-4, staying just in front of the pack that includes Alaska, TNT, GlobalPort and Rain or Shine (5-4) while dropping the Kings down to 5-5.

Matthew Wright and JC Intal led Phoenix in the important win. The rookie Wright scored 18 points and dished out five assists - both game-highs. He scored all of his points in the second half, eight of those in the fourth quarter, including a crucial three-pointer at the 1:51 mark that turned out to be the Phoenix's last basket but proved enough of a buffer for the win.

Intal, the former Gilas Pilipinas member, had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while also tallying two steals and two blocks. He also hit a key triple in the fourth quarter less than a minute before Wright's big shot. (Interaksyon.com)

Lines of the Game:
JC Intal (PHX) - 16pts, 10rebs, 1ast, 2stls, 2blks, 2 triples.
LA Tenorio (GIN) - 15pts, 3rebs, 3asts, 2stls, 1 triple.

Phelps number one in Philippines for round 1 - 1 day ago
American Forward Eugene Phelps (198-F-90) had an amazing evening in the last round for Phoenix, receiving a Asia-basket.com Player of the Week award for round 1. The 26-year old player had a double-double of 53 points and 21 rebounds, while his team edged out Blackwater (#9, 0-1), the league's bottom-ranked team 118-116. Phoenix is placed at 4th position in Filipino PBA. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Phoenix won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anyth...   [read more]

Banking on its veteran leaders, Tanduay pulled off a 66-55 stunner over Cignal-San Beda to claim Game 1 of their best-of-3 semifinals series in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants' Cup Tuesday at Marikina Sports Center. Ex-pros Jerwin Gaco (190-F-81) and Mark Cruz (165-PG) paired up to help the Rhum Masters silence the top-seed Hawkeyes in the middle quarters to move a win away from booking a return trip to the championship series. Gaco led Tanduay with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assi...   [read more]
