The 2013 Super Kung Sheung Cup Day 2: Gilas Destroys Hong Kong - Jan 23, 2013

True to form, the Gilas Pilipinas squad ran roughshod over the hosts in Day 2 of the 2013 Super Kung Sheung Cup tournament.

Once again, it appeared as if naturalized big man Marcus Douthit was hardly needed, though he did contribute 6 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 22 minutes of action. Instead, it was KG Caaleta who top-scored for the Pinoys anew, scoring 15 points on the strength of three triples to go along with 8 boards and 2 rejections. He was backstopped by NCAA rivals Kevin Alas and Jake Pascual, who tossed in 14 and 10 markers respectively.

The lone bright spot for Hong Kong was 65 center Wong Chun Wai, who scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. In a peculiar strategy, the Hong Kong cagers actually attempted more shots from beyond the arc than they did from inside the two-point area. Head coach Kwong Wai Cheungs wards hoisted 42 shots from rainbow country, making just 6.

This win assured coach Chot Reyes and his boys of the top spot in Group A and an automatic semifinal berth. Gilas Pilipinas next plays Indonesia to close out the eliminations.

Other matches:

Malaysia beat Indonesia, 89-67, thanks to the combined 42 points of Hong Hoong Gan and Shee Weng Loh. Gan made 4 of his 9 three-point attempts, while Loh also collared 15 caroms. The Indons were led by Respati Pamungkas and Januar Kuntara, who scored 16 and 15 points respectively.

The Changsha Park Lane Snow Wolves defeated Hong Kong Xinlibao, 68-66. Liu Peng scored 14 points to pace Changsha, while 68 Jiang Junqi registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Yu Xiaohang and Zhang Dongyang combined for 31 points to lead Xinlibao.

Defending champions SCFA (Southern California Fukienese Association) trounced Thailand, 85-71. Jerome Moton, Jr., Robert Curtis, Trayvonte Britt, and Ramall Goodrich all scored 15 points or more to spearhead the SCFA charge. The Thais were led by Wuttipong Dasoms 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Jericho Cruz
Rain or Shine sends Jericho Cruz to TNT; GlobalPort signs free agent Teng - 4 days ago
Disgruntled guard Jericho Cruz (182-G-90) was sent by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to TNT KaTropa in exchange for rookie Sidney Onwubere (193-F-93) and a 2018 first-round rookie draft pick. The four-year forward out of Adamson had expressed his intention in joining former coach Yeng Guiao who is currently the coach of the NLEX Road Warriors (which belongs in the same umbrella with TNT - the MVP Group) but the move prevented the reunion. Cruz, Rain or Shine's ninth overall pick in t...   [read more]

John Paul Erram (203-F/C-89) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Blackwater and that's him to receive a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 8. The 28-year old power forward had a double-double of 24 points and eighteen rebounds, while his team beat SM Beermen (#1, 6-2) 106-96. Blackwater is placed at 10th position in Filipino PBA. Blackwater is rather a weak team placed in lower part in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 3-5 rec...   [read more]

PBA Round 8: Alaska Aces lose #1 position - 6 days ago
There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with change at the leadership position, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin. Round 8 in PBA means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Makati City where host NLEX RW (5-4) beat league's leader Alaska Aces (6-3) 96-89 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Alaska Aces. NLEX RW looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. The best player...   [read more]
