In an early rematch of last year's ASEAN Basketball League finalists, the retooled San Miguel Beermen edged the Indonesia Warriors, 64-53, at the jam-packed Mahaka Square Sportsmall in Indonesia.

Brian Williams had an impressive debut for the Beermen with 15 points and had a monstrous 19 boards to his credit. Chris Banchero (185-G, college: Seattle Pacific) and Leo Avenido (186-G-78) added 14 and 10 points respectively. Gabe Freeman (198-F-85, college: Costa Mesa JC), the high profile Beermen reinforcement, finished only with 8 points and was plague with foul trouble. The Beermen also paraded the most anticipated pair in local basketball, Asi Taulava (206-C-73, college: BYU-Hawaii) and Eric Menk (199-F-74, college: L.Superior) with a new coach, Leovino Austria .

The game featured series of runs and defensive intensity from both ends with the Beermen leading the Warriors at halftime by five, 30-25. With a low scoring ballgame at hand, the Beermen controlled the boards and as the game progresses, grew more and more comfortable. The game becomes more physical evident with some exchanges of words between players. Warriors coach John Todd Purves was called a technical foul in the third canto due to a dispute on a call.

The defensive intensity continued in the final quarter as the Beermens frontline took advantage as half of the San Miguel's points came inside the paint. A pair of free throws by Banchero and a basket by Williams with 1:28 left in the game assured the win for the Beermen. Rebounding was a major factor in the Beermens victory as they outrebounded the Warriors, 50-36.

Steve Thomas (204-C/F-81, college: Middle Tenn.St.) led the defending champions with 15 points and 14 rebounds while Chris Daniels (200-PF-82, agency: Limelight Hoops, college: Georgia) had a debut of 10 and 11.

Scores:

San Miguel Beermen (64) -- Williams 15, Banchero 14, Avenido 10, Rizada 9, Freeman 8, Menk 6, Taulava 2

Indonesia Warriors (53) -- Thomas 15, Daniels 10, Canada 9, Smith 7, Wuysang 6, Sitepu 3, Prihantono 3

Quarterscores: 16-9; 30-25; 45-38; 64-53.

A legend returns for Chinese Taipei as they are set to begin preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers in November. That legend is none other than "The Beast" himself, Lin Chih-Chieh. After last seeing action in the FIBA Asia Cup 2015, Lin was supposed to have retired from international basketball, but he has been called up again this year to be part of coach Chou Chun-San's initial 35-man pool for the first window of the Asian Qualifiers that will take place i...   [read more]
Llamas names veteran-laden Japan selection for Asian Qualifiers - 3 days ago
Julio Lamas has released the 24-man national pool that will spearhead Japan's cause at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers. A cursory look at the list reveals Lamas's preference for veteran presence in the national side. More than half of the pool is made up of players aged 27 years or older, with naturalized player Ira Brown the eldest at 35. Big men Atsuya Ota, Kosuke Takeuchi and Joji Takeuchi round out the 30-year-olds in the pool together with the returning Takuya Ka...   [read more]
