Tough challenge ahead for the nationals.

After the success in the recently concluded William Jones Cup, Smart Gilas opens its bid in the 24th Dubai International basketball tournament today at the Al Ahli Club. Faced with a formidable task, coach Vincent Reyes admits that his wards will have a rough time in the tournament that features Al Moutahed Tripoli as one of the favorites to win the title.

The current composition of this Gilas team is far more different from the one that won the Jones Cup title last August 2012. The team is currently led by original Gilas and naturalized player Marcus Douthit (210-C/F-80, agency: Edge Sports, college: Providence) and three Philippine Basketball Assosication (PBA) players namely, Ronjay Buenafe (188-G-83) and Jay-R Reyes (200-C-84) of the Meralco Bolts and Nino Canaleta (196-F-82) of the Air21 Express. They are joined by amateur stalwarts, Greg Slaughter (211-C-88), RR Garcia, Kevin Louie Alas (PG), Garvo Lanete, Ronald and Jake Pascual, Matthew Rosser, Justin Melton, and Isaac Holstein. Imports are allowed in the tournament but Reyes opted for a local line-up in preparation for the 27th FIBA-Asia Mens Basketball Championship which will be held in Manila this year.

Mindanao All Star humbles Smart RP Team - 11 hours ago
The PBA Mindanao All Stars pulled a surprise in Cagayan de Oro last year in fighting Gilas Pilipinas to a tie. Baser Amer (180-PG-92) and his teammates effectively neutralized Team Phl's height advantage with their quickness and torrid shooting, and dealt the Nationals a tremendous beatin...   [read more]

He will be supported by Christian Standhardinger (206-F-89, college: Hawaii) (who just finished an outstanding season with the HK Eastern Lon...   [read more]

VERNON MACKLIN Experienced American Vernon Macklin (208-F/C-86) had an amazing evening in the last round for Hotshots and that's him to receive a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 6. The 31-year old power forward had a double-double of 21 points and fifteen rebounds, while his team edged out Meralco Bolts (#5, 3-2) 81-79. Hotshots is placed at 4th position in Filipino PBA.
