Tough challenge ahead for the nationals.

After the success in the recently concluded William Jones Cup, Smart Gilas opens its bid in the 24th Dubai International basketball tournament today at the Al Ahli Club. Faced with a formidable task, coach Vincent Reyes admits that his wards will have a rough time in the tournament that features Al Moutahed Tripoli as one of the favorites to win the title.

The current composition of this Gilas team is far more different from the one that won the Jones Cup title last August 2012. The team is currently led by original Gilas and naturalized player Marcus Douthit (210-C/F-80, agency: Edge Sports, college: Providence) and three Philippine Basketball Assosication (PBA) players namely, Ronjay Buenafe (188-G-83) and Jay-R Reyes (200-C-84) of the Meralco Bolts and Nino Canaleta (196-F-82) of the Air21 Express. They are joined by amateur stalwarts, Greg Slaughter (211-C-88), RR Garcia, Kevin Louie Alas (PG), Garvo Lanete, Ronald and Jake Pascual, Matthew Rosser, Justin Melton, and Isaac Holstein. Imports are allowed in the tournament but Reyes opted for a local line-up in preparation for the 27th FIBA-Asia Mens Basketball Championship which will be held in Manila this year.

Beermen draw first blood versus Kings - 14 hours ago
San Miguel Beer made a statement in the opener of the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven finals, jumping out of the starting block and roaring all the way to a 109-82 rout of Barangay Ginebra at the MOA Arena in Pasay City Wednesday. With a longer rest than Ginebra from their Final Four grinds, the Beermen made a conscious effort to push the tempo from the get-go, and got their desired results. SMB starters June Mar Fajardo (210-C-89), Chris Ross (185-G-85, college: Marshall), Arwind S...   [read more]

Ginebra crushes Star, sets duel of champs vs SMB - 4 days ago
Barangay Ginebra reigned over Star in their do-or-die setto and set up an interesting battle of champs with San Miguel Beer in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup finale. The Gin Kings stoked the fire of their 91-67 triumph over the Star Hotshots the last time and repeated with a wire-to-wire 89-76 win Tuesday night to claim the second berth in the best-of-seven title playoff. San Miguel secured the first finals berth early on in topping TNT KaTropa also in Game Seven of their own semis duel. Sol...   [read more]

Beermen crush Texters, clinch first finals berth - 5 days ago
San Miguel Beer's Super Five all came through with super effort in near no-relief games as the Beermen crushed the Jason Castro-less TNT KaTropa side, 96-83, to nail the first berth in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals Monday night at the MOA Arena. June Mar Fajardo (210-C-89), Arwind Santos (193-F-81), Chris Ross (185-G-85, college: Marshall), Alex Cabagnot (183-G-82, college: Hawaii-Hilo) and Marcio Lassiter (190-G-87, college: CS Fullerton) were Iron Men powering SMB past TNT in their do-o...   [read more]
