Reyes
Tough challenge ahead for the nationals.

After the success in the recently concluded William Jones Cup, Smart Gilas opens its bid in the 24th Dubai International basketball tournament today at the Al Ahli Club. Faced with a formidable task, coach Vincent Reyes admits that his wards will have a rough time in the tournament that features Al Moutahed Tripoli as one of the favorites to win the title.

The current composition of this Gilas team is far more different from the one that won the Jones Cup title last August 2012. The team is currently led by original Gilas and naturalized player Marcus Douthit (210-C/F-80, agency: Edge Sports, college: Providence) and three Philippine Basketball Assosication (PBA) players namely, Ronjay Buenafe (188-G-83) and Jay-R Reyes (200-C-84) of the Meralco Bolts and Nino Canaleta (196-F-82) of the Air21 Express. They are joined by amateur stalwarts, Greg Slaughter (211-C-88), RR Garcia, Kevin Louie Alas (PG), Garvo Lanete, Ronald and Jake Pascual, Matthew Rosser, Justin Melton, and Isaac Holstein. Imports are allowed in the tournament but Reyes opted for a local line-up in preparation for the 27th FIBA-Asia Mens Basketball Championship which will be held in Manila this year.

Host team Thailand continued to roll in the 2016 SEABA Stankovic Cup, trouncing Malaysia to move up to 2-0. Singapore, meanwhile, drubbed the Indons to start off their campaign in style. Scores and Recaps: Day 2 SINGAPORE over INDONESIA, 62-40 - Delvin Goh and Lim Shengyu each put up a monster double-double to lead the Singaporeans in blowing out the hapless Indons. Karl Dehesa
Dehesa acquired by GlobalPort; Garcia, Brondial joins Star - May 23, 2016

A whirlwind of trades happened to bolster the teams that had been eliminated during the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner's Cup in preparation for the upcoming Governor's Cup in July. The Mahindra Enforcers and the GlobalPort Batang Pier started the carousel by sending the vastly improved Karl Dehesa (188-G-87, college: Waldorf) in exchange for guards Roi Sumang (177-PG-91) and Paolo Taha (188-G-90). Sumang, a wily guard who lost in the rotation in the GlobalPort line...   [read more]
