Tough challenge ahead for the nationals.

After the success in the recently concluded William Jones Cup, Smart Gilas opens its bid in the 24th Dubai International basketball tournament today at the Al Ahli Club. Faced with a formidable task, coach Vincent Reyes admits that his wards will have a rough time in the tournament that features Al Moutahed Tripoli as one of the favorites to win the title.

The current composition of this Gilas team is far more different from the one that won the Jones Cup title last August 2012. The team is currently led by original Gilas and naturalized player Marcus Douthit (210-C/F-80, agency: Edge Sports, college: Providence) and three Philippine Basketball Assosication (PBA) players namely, Ronjay Buenafe (188-G-83) and Jay-R Reyes (200-C-84) of the Meralco Bolts and Nino Canaleta (196-F-82) of the Air21 Express. They are joined by amateur stalwarts, Greg Slaughter (211-C-88), RR Garcia, Kevin Louie Alas (PG), Garvo Lanete, Ronald and Jake Pascual, Matthew Rosser, Justin Melton, and Isaac Holstein. Imports are allowed in the tournament but Reyes opted for a local line-up in preparation for the 27th FIBA-Asia Mens Basketball Championship which will be held in Manila this year.

Vincent 'Chot' Reyes is back as the head coach of Gilas, the Philippine National Team, as appointed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) last October 18. The multi-titled coach last handled Gilas in 2014 and took the country in its most prominent moments in its basketball history in the last 40-plus years.
