Larry Fonacier (190-F/G-82), the heartbreaker.

Fonacier and the defending PBA Philippine Cup champions Talk N Text Tropang Texters showed resiliency despite a late rally by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to win, 87-81, and take a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-7 championship series Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Rain or Shine came storming back from as much as 17 points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to just three, 79-76, with 3:19 left in the game. But Fonacier, fondly called the Babyface Assassin, buried a cold-blooded triple in the next play as both teams traded baskets ending with Tropang Texters Jayson Castro (173-PG-86) converting a difficult layup over the outstretched arms of Elasto Painters Jervy Cruz (193-F/C-86).

Turnovers and shooting woes added to loss of Rain or Shine as the Painters committed two costly turnovers in the final 1:30 of the game. Also, Rain or Shine just managed to shot 4-of-21 from beyond the arc as the Painters top gunner, Jeffrei Chan (192-F-83), only finished with 10 points and did not converted anything from the three-point area.

Both teams shot below 40 percent, as the teams played a defensive game that can be the tone of the series.

The Tropang Texters started hot, scoring 11 straight unanswered points and continued towards the second quarter with the lead ballooning, 33-15.

Castro and Ranidel deOcampo (195-F-81) each paced the Tropang Texters with 16 points, while Cruz lead the Elasto Painters with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Scores:

Talk N Text (87) -- Castro 16, De Ocampo 16, Dillinger 13, Fonacier 9, Alapag 9, Peek 8, Williams 6, Raymundo 3, Reyes 3, Alvarez 2, Carey 2, Gamalinda 0, Aban 0, Ferriols 0

Rain or Shine (81) -- Cruz 13, Lee 11, Chan 10, Norwood 8, Rodriguez 8, Quinahan 8, Tiu 5, Belga 5, Ibanes 4, Matias 3, Tang 3, Arana 3.

Quarterscores: 24-15; 51-39; 71-58; 87-81.

Chooks-to-Go rallies to notch opening win - 23 hours ago
Kiefer Ravena (181-G/F-93) and naturalized player prospect Isaiah Austin (216-C-93, college: Baylor) led the fight back of Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas to edge BC Astana, 73-65, in their opening games in the current FIBA Asia Champions Cup at the Chenzhou Sports Center in China last September 22 (Manila time). Ravena paced the nationals with 22 points, 11 of which were scored in the pivotal third quarter, three rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. NLEX-SCTEX struggles to sustain strong start against Shanghai Sharks, falls to 0-2 - 1 day ago
Coming off a 20 point-beating at the hands of Korean powerhouse Jeonju KCC Egis, the NLEX-SCTEX Road Warriors had a strong start against defending Merlion Cup champions Shanghai Sharks in hopes of a bounce back victory. However, the Philippine-side could not sustain, being overwhelmed in the final frame in a 79-65 loss, Thursday evening at the OCBC Arena in Singapore. NLEX-SCTEX fell to a 0-2 record in Group A and have been virtually eliminated to advance to the next round. Jason Perkins...   [read more]

Despite Jason Perkins' stellar showing, NLEX-SCTEX receives 20-point rout in Merlion Cup opener - 2 days ago
The NLEX-SCTEX Road Warriors looked disjointed in the opener of the 2017 Merlion Cup, falling to Korean club team Jeonju KCC Egis, 99-79, Wednesday evening at the OCBC Arena in Singapore. Jason Perkins (193-F), a pivotal member of two-time PBA D-League champions Cignal HD Hawkeyes, was the sole bright spot for the Road Warriors, finishing with 25 points on an excellent 9-for-15 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. But despite his showing, the Road Warriors were overmatched at all fron...   [read more]
