Favourites and hosts Bausher Club lifted the basketball title on the concluding day of the women sports championships, organised by the Bausher Club at their club yesterday. In a lop-sided final, Bausher outplayed Hail al Awamir School 45-4 to clinch the title. Indian School Muscat (ISM) finished third.
The championships, which attracted a total of 17 teams including schools, organised three events — basketball, volleyball and football — with Bausher girls also winning the football title. Bausher Club Chairman Sayyid Nasser bin Salim al Busaidy was the chief guest and presented the awards yesterday.
According to Bausher Club Deputy Chairman Suleiman bin Juma al Hassani one of the club’s basic aims is to promote women sports in the Sultanate and going by the success of the championships, they are quite happy to continue with their mission to develop sports among women.
A total of nine teams took part in the basketball event, 15 teams participated in the volleyball tourney while eight teams featured in the football competition. ISM won the volleyball title while Umaima bint Abid al As were second and Faidh al Marifa were third.
In football, Aisha bint Masoud School were runners-up behind Bausher and Hail al Awamir were third. He added the championships had begun on March 18 when the football and volleyball events were organised and the finals of both the competitions were held on March 24.
Also present on the occasion were Oman Women's Sports Development Committee (OWSDC) Deputy Chairperson Saada bint Salim al Ismaily, sponsors representatives and large contingent of schoolchildren.
