Legendary Indian basketball player Shankar Laxman’s demise was received with a pall of gloom by the basketball fraternity in Oman yesterday. Talking to an arabic local newspaper in oman, Saiyed Ali Sibtain Naqvi, who had shared the limelight with Shankar Laxman during the 1950s and 60s, sounded extremely sorry to hear the news. Naqvi, who is the former technical adviser of the Oman Olympic Committee and still associates with the Oman Basketball Association activities, recalled those golden period, when Shankar Laxman was hailed as the best center in the asia in that period. “It was a shocking news from me, when Negi (another Indian stalwart) telephoned me to pass the message,” said Naqvi. A former international basketball umpire of repute, Naqvi, recalled the period when he was associated with Shankar and said: “He was one of the best goalkeepers I have seen during my playing days.” According to Indian basketball sources, Shankar, 72, passed away in Mhow on Saturday and is survived by his wife, son and three daughters. The former custodian, who represented India in three successive Olympics, beginning 1956, was suffering from ‘gangrene’ in one of his legs. Doctors had advised amputation, family sources said, but he avoided it for some time and was undergoing alternate treatment for the ailment. Born July 7, 1933, Laxman captained the Indian team at the 1966 Asian Games and was conferred the Padma Shri the following year.

Mohammed Hassan (194-F/G-80) stepped up with 15 points for Bahrain. Bader Abdulla Malabes (87) and Ahmed Al Dirazi delivered 12 points apiece in the victory. Mohmood Abdulla responded with 10 points for Oman. Ali Al Sobahi added 8 points in the losing effort.

EU: Coach, it is a true joy to be able to chat with you. How have you found your way back to the Middle East? Most recently, you were in Hungary preparing for the playoffs in the top league there. FL: Yes, I was in Jaszbereny club and my mission was to help the club to secure the place in Top division and it was successful as the club reached that goal and will continue to compete in Top Hungarian division in next season which makes me very satisfied especially because of people who are running club and wonderful fans. There was a chance for me to stay in Hungarian basketball but people from Oman Association have me on their radar from before so I took this chance without thinking twice.
EU: Having coached abroad, not only in your home country of Serbia, but also in Libya and most recently in Hungary, what is your view of the level of play across the different regions? FL: Definitely there are different levels across the different regions and great thing for me is that I have chance to collect different experience which helps me a lot to improve myself more. I made my first steps as a coach in Serbia and that knowledge what I gained working 10 years in my country is immeasurable and I think that Serbia is one of the few best countries where you can became a basketball coach. On the other hand ccoaching the national team of Libya was great experience for me and I improved a lot during that time as a coach and Libya and I have worked with wonderful people and players there and Libya will always have special place in my heart.
EU: What is your take on recent rule changes? For example. Defensive 3 seconds, or the moving blocks that become prevalent in almost every league imaginable, Can you tell us more on that? FL: I think we coaches should try very hard to adapt to all changes as the game is transforming very quickly, thinking about it doesnt helps too much.
EU: How do you see the evolution of the game, over the course of your career? Having been a part of epic games in International competition and National Team Games. FL: I think basketball is still evolving very fast on all levels more and slower in NBA as I still think that the best quality of basketball in NBA was in 90es, but European competitions are getting more stronger every season especially Euroleague wich is every season closer to NBA and the games in Euroleague are so rich technically and tactically and physically as well. Also basketball in all other regions is transforming very fast, take a Tunis as example, who thought before few years that they can reach world Championship and Olympic Games.
EU: From scouting and observing games, one can see a type of shift in focus from a focus on coaching to a more focus on players and their wants/desires,etc. Not only in the NBA, but also in countries like Holland and France we have seen players doing things quite out of character on the part of a player. How do you feel this type of behavior impacts the game? FL: That is one of the biggest difficulties of our job and coaches are facing this on all levels and many times unfortunately can have big impact on the game and usually negative. There are things above our profession that can help especially family, society and schools can help to form good and healthy persons in early stages.
EU: The new development of you signing on to take the National Team of Oman, after holding things with the National Team of Libya comes as quite a surprise. Can you tell us more about this? FL: It is big difference between coaching club and national team. As a coach of national team sometimes you have to prepare your team in short time for strong competition or to renew the National team with younger and stay on your level at the same time, there is no solid schedule like in club competitions so planning is always different. I have been coaching Libyan national team for 3 years and during this time I had chance to work with local players from that region and to play friendly and official games against Arab teams and teams from Persian Gulf as well so maybe it is not a surprise that I found myself here in Oman after all.
EU: What are you plans for the upcoming season 2012/2013? FL: I have signed one year contract with option to renew with Oman basketball association so all my plans are focused on developing of Oman basketball. In short terms I will participate on GCC competition in Bahrain on the end of September with senior Oman national team. In long terms I believe we can reach a lot together and we can raise basketball her to a new level as I have very good cooperation with Oman Basketball Association and I feel very comfortable in this country.
EU: Do you want to share anything with your fan base, not only in Serbia but also in Libya and across the globe? FL: I am happy that I can share my thoughts with people from basketball all over the globe and this is something that basketball gave to me and it makes me satisfied. I am wishing all the best for my basketball friends in Serbia,Libya,Hungary and Oman.Also I wish that basketball will come back soon to Libya and my biggest wish in this moment is to make good results with Oman national team.
EU: Any other closing thoughts? FL: Regards for Eurobasket readers from Muscat, Oman - one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life.
