Cager Wen Keong Tong (180-G-92) has defied all odds to make the PRG Eagles squad to play in the Malaysia Pro League (MPL). The 25-year-old point guard was one of Malaysia's brightest prospects, playing for Westports Malaysia Dragons in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) in 2015. He was also the national team captain for the 2015 Singapore SEA Games. But his career was cut short in a fatal car accident on Oct 11 the same year. The 1.80m tall Wen Keong survived the accident which claimed two lives. But he suffered a serious left elbow fracture and was told by doctors he would not be able to compete at the highest level again. Now two years later, the Johor-born Wen Keong is back on court and ready to impress in the inaugural MPL which tips off on Friday. 'I wanted to be back on court so bad but my elbow injury was quite serious. I couldn't take any chances. But I diligently went through the physiotherapy sessions and managed to play again. 'I'm really excited to be back. And I'm really grateful to the Eagles and the coaches for giving me another chance. I'm not sure if I can ever reach my previous best but I definitely want to help the team as best as I can,' added Wen Keong who is also the Eagles' assistant team manager. There are six teams competing in the one-month MPL. Besides the Eagles, the others are KL Dragons Basketball Academy, Farmco TouchUp, Penang Stallions, Verve Club and King Pinas Asia. The Dragons will take on Farmco in the opening match at the Maba Stadium on Friday. 'This is the inaugural league so there will definitely be some shortcomings. But we hope to keep improving and get the league properly running next year,' said MPL commissioner Sim Sin Heng at the launch of the league yesterday.

Size doesn't matter as Addy steers Dragons to slim victory - 5 days ago
The shortest man stood tall as the KL Dragons held off the PRG Eagles 74-71 in the Malaysia Pro League (MPL). The Dragons were down 69-71 against the Eagles with time running out in the fourth quarter at the Maba Stadium. And Addy Tung Chee Keong, who stands at 1.65m, stepped up to the plate as he delivered a three-pointer for the Dragons to lead 72-71 with 28 seconds left on the clock yesterday. The 28-year-old was not done yet. He went to draw a foul off Wei Yong Ong (177-PG-93) before...   [read more]
Addy powers Dragons in win over Farmco - 9 days ago
Addy Tung Chee Keong was part of the Westports Malaysia Dragons squad for two years from 2014 but never made the grade. But the 1.65m point guard finally got to show his worth for the KL Dragons BA in the inaugural Malaysia Pro League (MPL) at the Maba Stadium yesterday. Despite being the smallest cager on court, the 28-year-old guided a ragtag Dragons team formed just a week ago to a surprising 81-67 win over Farmco TouchUp. He even managed to score over Farmco's 2.23m import Samuel Degu...   [read more]

Kelantan Warriors and Bintulu Eagles join forces - 12 days ago
Two basketball clubs have joined forces for the Malaysia Pro League (MPL) challenge. The Kelantan Warriors, winners of the now defunct Malaysian National Basketball League in 2013, have teamed up with East Malaysian outfit Bintulu Eagles to form a new team - the PRG Eagles. The Eagles are not just aiming to win the title, they are also in it for the long haul. 'The idea of setting up this club is to take care of the players by signing them on long-term deals thus providing them with stabl...   [read more]
