The Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions continue to roll. On Friday, the Long Lions defeated the Westports Malaysia Dragons, 115-90, inside the House of Champions, Gem-In Mall, Cyberjaya, in Malaysia. The win marked Hong Kong's 7th straight victory and 12th overall. The 115 points scored by the Long Lions tied the ABL all-time scoring total. Incidentally, the last time a team scored that much was made by the Dragons a season ago. Everything was clicking for the Long Lions against the Dragons on Friday. Marcus Elliott (191-G-84, college: Louisiana Tech) and Josh Boone (208-F/C-84, college: Connecticut) combined for 50 points as they earned Co-Players of the Game honors, while Tyler Lamb was equally stellar with 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. 'We prepared for the game really well,' Long Lions head coach Eduard Torres said proudly. A week earlier, the Dragons and Long Lions also met in Malaysia. In that game, the home team pushed the number one team to the limit before eventually losing in the end. It was a narrow win for Hong Kong. In fact, it was a little too close for comfort. The Long Lions knew that in a week's time they would face the Dragons once again and so they prepared rigorously for their second straight meeting. 'The whole week we've been preparing the game, thinking it must be a playoff game because they play really tough,' coach Torres went on. 'We gave our best tonight.' Hong Kong's dedication and preparation led to the 25-point win against the defending champions. 'We started to play earlier this game. The first half last game we weren't really ourselves,' observed Boone. 'This game we got out to a nine point lead at halftime and in the third quarter, we kept the pressure on them.' True enough, it was in the second half that the Long Lions flipped the switch. They scored 26 points in the third quarter and amped up their scoring even more in the last quarter when they erupted for 35 points. For Malaysia, Tian Yuan Kuek (201-C-91) was the top-scorer with 22 points, including 5-for-8 from downtown. Kuek was a solid contributor off the bench for the Dragons, but unfortunately, starters Joshua Munzon (191-G-95, college: CS Los Angeles) and Kiwi Gardner (170-PG-93, college: Providence) both had a quiet night offensively. Munzon only tallied 9 points while Gardner, despite having 18 points, only shot 33 percent from the floor. The Dragons are now 3-13 and are dead last in the team standings. On the other hand, the Long Lions remain on top with a 12-2 record. 'I don't think we have to think too much,' coach Torres said about his team's current winning streak. 'There's no time to celebrate. We just have to keep going. Tomorrow the sun will rise again and after Sunday (versus the Kaohsiung Truth), winning or losing, the sun will rise again.'

CAGERS Perry Lim, Yifan Hou (196-F-92) Wong (196-F-96) and Chun Hong Ting (193-C-96) marked their SEA Games debut with a rousing performance against Myanmar in front of a sell-out crowd at the Maba Stadium. The National Basketball League season might be well behind them, but the Taranaki Mountain Airs showed they were still locked in with a 104-81 win over Malaysia. As part of the Malaysian men's team's tour of New Zealand, the Augusta Mountain Airs hosted the Malaysian side at New Plymouth's YMCA. With imports and a few key players unavailable, locals had the chance to get meaningful minutes on the floor for the home side. Big man Xavier Shaw (203-F-94, college: MSU-Northern) made sure not...   [read more]
