Westports Malaysia Dragons will be competing in the 2016 Merlion Cup, Singapore, from 21st - 26th September 2016. They will first be facing off the Samsung Thunders from Seoul this Thursday, 22nd September at 6:30pm at the OCBC Arena. The Samsung Thunders is a Korean team that has competed in several other basketball leagues and competitions including the Korean Basketball League (KBL). They were the champions of the 2000-2001 and the 2005-2006 KBL Championships. Furthermore, they also competed continentally in the Asian Basketball Association (ABA) Club Championships and emerged as champions in 2001, 2007 and 2010. The Seoul's Samsung Thunders have proven to be a formidable team to go up against, nevertheless, Coach Cheng Huat Goh who is leading the team in the this tournament has spoken highly of their upcoming opponents but has confidence that his team has the potential of overcoming them on court this Thursday. 'We will be closely watching the match between Samsung Thunders and Mighty Sports today (Wednesday) to watch their game play and strategy so we can mentally prepare ourselves when we face them.' said Dragons' Coach Cheng Huat Goh . Coach Goh believes a strong willpower is fundamental for the players when they are playing on court.
Team Dragons is made up mostly with Malaysian National Team representatives which includes Tian Yuan Kuek (200-C-91), Eng Heng Soo (182-G-84), Yeow Loong Ho (178-G-88), Syahrul Ridzuan Bin Rosli, Yi Hou Wong (191-G/F-96), Shen Hao Yim, Chun Hong Ting (189-C-96), Ivan Yeo (193-F-93), Wei Yong Ong, Anthony Liew Wen Qian and American Import Joel Wright (201-F-90, college: Texas St.). From these number of talented players, Coach Goh has selected Tian Yuan Kuek (Power Forward), Chun Hong Ting (Small Forward), Wong Yi Hao (Shooting Guard), Yeow Loong Ho (Point Guard) and Joel Wright (Center) to be his starting 5 players. Joel Wright is Dragons' latest addition to the team, the only import player they currently have. Wright was drafted into the Delaware 87ers, a National Basketball Association (NBA) D-League team and the Star Hotshots, a professional basketball team in the Philippines which competes in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) D-League. The 201cm, 26-year-old forward is expected to be a key starting player for team Dragons.
Coach Goh, in regards to his starting picks said, 'These are the players that I have confidence in because they have played very well in the two previous leagues (Penang Chief Minister Cup & Philippines Basketball Association Development League (PBA -D)) we have participated in. However, changes to the first five will may be needed in the event that we decide to change our strategy.' Westports Malaysia Dragons will also have their new head coach Mr. Christopher Thomas join and observe the team in the 2016 Merlion Cup. Coach Thomas has just arrived in Malaysia 2 days ago and is already been warmly welcomed by his new team. Excited to follow his team to Singapore, Coach Thomas has expressed that as this is his first tournament with the team, he looks to get to know his players and all their strength and weaknesses, to build a solid team foundation.
