Al Riyadi is a sports club well known for its successes in senior basketball. But what you may not know is the club has its youth academy designed considered as top program in middle east. Great organization, facilities and coaching stafff - Lebanese basketball has a bright future.

We had a chance to chat with Marwan Diab, Al Riyadi's youth head coach.

Coach, thanks for chatting with us. Can you please indroduce yourself.

Thanks, my name is Marwan Diab, I am youth categories coach in Al Riyadi basketball club. I have started my coaching career in Harlem Academy 10 years ago. Then I coached youth categories in Hoops Club and finally got an offer from Al Riyadi - one of the best clubs in middle east. In the parallel I was head coach for American University of Beirut for 5 years and also assistant coach for U17 Lebanese National Team.

In Al Riyadi, what age categories you coach?

U16 and U18. Last year we won U16 champs. Unfortunately there are not many U18 clubs so federation decided not to run the league. But we still practise and guys have a chance to attend senior practises as well.

Do they get chances to get in rotation?
Karim Zeinoun and Salim Alaaeddin are important part of the rotation. But also other players will finally get their minutes. It is a just matter of time.

People in Europe don't know much about Middle East basketball, especially youth... how does it look?

Basketball is the most popular sport in Lebanon. Kids join basketball clubs in youth age, have great chance to achieve sucess in senior sport. Our youth program is designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship, a love of the game of basketball but also to tech teamwork and rivality.

Every year we travel to compete with the best in the world. Last summer we took part in ISBL Cup in Turkey. Our rivals were Andalou Efes, Khimki and Fenerbahce. Despite we lost all games it was a great experience for us. We also went to the USA to participate in two Kansas City tournaments. We managed to finish on 3rd and 2nd position.

You are not only youth coach, but also womens assistant coach.

Yes, I am an assistant coach of women team. We are 3-time champion in last 4 years, also earned some trophies in international competition like Arab Club Champs. There are lots of differences in coaching women and men, but it is a great experience that makes me better coach every day.

Thanks coach for a quick chat and good luck!
