Im sitting here in my apartment just finish practice, thinking about my experiences in my first four years playing pro overseas. I have played in some interesting places, my first year I played in France. The French league was a pretty good league. Both the local players and the imports were good on each team. So every night you had to come to play or you would get exposed. The way of living over there was pretty good, especially since I was able to take my family over with me. I built a good friendship with the other import on my team combo forward Marcellus Sommerville (200-F-82, college: Bradley) and his family. So I really couldnt really ask for a better situation for my first year. And they were really professional! And on top of it Im a very open minded person so I able to adjust to different ways of life. My second year was different I played in two different countries. The first place I was in was Bahrain, I like playing in Bahrain. Everything about Bahrain gave me a good impression about basketball in the Middle East since it was my first time other there. The club that I played for Al Hala was professional about handling business in terms of money and my living. The level of play was not as good as playing in France but the local players came to practice and worked hard every day. So I couldnt ask anything more from them as long as they gave their all. After I left Bahrain I finished the season in Ukraine. The Ukraine was very different!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The one good thing about playing in about playing in the Ukraine is that a lot of the teams pay pretty well! But thats if they pay you all your money! IF! My team was cool in paying but it got a little shaky towards the end of the season. But the way of living in the Ukraine was not that good, in fact it was horrible. Enough Said! Basketball was good, the local players were good and big and somewhat physical. So the level of basketball was good and there were good imports in the league as well. I had Marcus Wilson (192-G-77, college: Evansville), and Eddy Mayfield (185-G-81, college: Sam Houston St.) on my team and they were pretty good! Eddy was a super fast silky smooth point and Marcus was a flat out scorer! And on top of it they were really good people! My third season is when I really started to enjoy and appreciate this opportunity that God has given me to play basketball overseas! I went to New Zealand and played for Hawks Bay Hawks. I had so many different experience in New Zealand I would be blogging for days. New Zealand is a beautiful country all round from the landscape of the country to local people and their greeting Hey Mate. I really enjoyed myself and my club was extremely professional. The coach Shawn Dennis is probably one of my best coaches I played for since I been a pro! He was cool as life and we worked hard in practice and he worked extremely hard as a coach. He really loved being a coach! Not only the coach but everybody, from the players to owners were great! They greatest enjoyment that I had while I was in New Zealand was I was able to go to church every Sunday! Thats one thing I love to do and I have not been able to do that in no other countries! The thing that people dont know about New Zealand basketball is that there are some really talented players in that league! This made the league good. So dont be surprised if you see New Zealand emerging out in the basketball world. I probably will end up back in New Zealand in the near future! Now my Fourth season Im back in the Middle East (Kuwait). The living in Kuwait is like being at home, only its smaller and you may see a Bentley or Range Rover on every other corner! For me thats different considering the fact that I grew up one of the poorest parts of Detroit. Kuwait has everything that we have in America here in a smaller setting. And I do mean just about everything! You would be in the grocery store and you would run into someone who maybe from Texas, Florida, or California. Basketball here in Kuwait is getting better from what I hear! The thing about Kuwait is that the local players determine the outcome of the games. If you have good local players and a good coach its a good chance that you will win. Because this season all the imports are good! And you can only have one import on the floor at a time! So that means they cancel each other out every night unless, you catch one who having a bad night which is rare. All of the US imports in the league have played in Europe or South America where there is high level basketball. So that means they can play! One thing that I notice about Kuwait is that the younger players are pretty good! The one local player that stood out to me is the young guard from Kazma club. He has a really good chance to be good! My team this year finished in the middle of the league. We are a team that has a lot of potential and our young players are only going to get better if they keep working! We played a lot of the top teams tough but we just couldn't pull it out! Overall my experience here in Kuwait is cool. My roommate and teamate Brandon Mason (194-G/F-81, college: N.Mexico St.) have help make my experience here even better. Hes a cool dude that can flat out play! Hey I got to go its 1:45am here and Im getting a little sleepy and I need to call home in the States and check on my two boys lil Chuck (5) and Drew (2). Lil Chuck has a Pee Wee basketball game today I need to find the outcome of that game! Later! More to come! CB
