Best players of Japanese B League round 53 - Apr 13, 2017

Robert Sacre
Canadian Robert Sacre (213-C-89) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Hitachi SR and that's him to receive a Asia-basket.com Player of the Week award for round 53.
The 27-year old center had a double-double of 28 points and ten rebounds, while his team edged out Yokohama BC (#5, 15-36) 69-66. Hitachi SR maintains the 3rd position in their group in Japanese B League. Hitachi SR is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 26-25 record. Sacre just recently signed at Hitachi SR, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Gonzaga University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Sacre is in league's top in rebounds (8th best: 9.0rpg).

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 36-year old American forward Jeffrey Gibbs (188-F-80) of league's best team Tochigi Brex. Gibbs impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Of course Tochigi Brex cruised to a 72-64 relatively comfortable win over slightly lower-ranked Chiba Jets (#3, 35-16). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the top position in East. Tochigi Brex consolidated its place in the very top position of the standings. His team lost just ten games this season, while they won 41 matches. Gibbs is a newcomer at Tochigi Brex and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders.

The third best performed player last round was South African Tshilidzi Nephawe (208-C-89) of Sendai 89ers (#6). Nephawe scored 23 points and grabbed fifteen rebounds (!!!). Despite Nephawe's great performance Sendai 89ers lost 63-84 to the higher-ranked Toyota Alvark (#2, 38-13). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. Sendai 89ers can only dream about fighting for top spots in East. They have rather bad season and 13-38 record places them close to the bottom of the standings. Too bad for Nephawe he does not play for a better team. But maybe if he did, his season stats would not be that high. Nephawe has a very solid season. In 51 games in Japan he scored 11.4ppg. He also has 8.6rpg, 1.1bpg and FGP: 51.0%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Davante Gardner (203-PF-91) of Niigata Albirex - 24 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists
5. Scott Morrison (213-C-86) of Akita NH - 17 points, 13 rebounds and 2 assists
6. Sam Willard (205-F-88) of Toyama Grouses - 22 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists
7. Xavier Gibson (210-F/C-88) of Osaka Evessa - 22 points and 10 rebounds
8. Craig Brackins (208-PF-87) of Shiga L-Stars - 24 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists
9. Marcus Dove (206-PF-85) of Kyoto Hannar. - 21 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Lamont Hamilton (208-C/F-84) of Ryukyu GK - 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Hometown hero Shintaro Kobayashi steals the show at B. League All-Star Game in Kumamoto - 3 days ago
The players didn't take themselves too seriously during the second annual B. League All-Star Game. Instead of focusing on lock-down defense for the full 40 minutes, they aimed to please. They put the focus on scoring points in a hurry with an emphasis on razzle-dazzle plays and lots of 3-point shots. In other words, it was standard fare for an All-Star contest. And on this day they often over-exaggerated their moves, such as a player falling backward after taking a mock charge or putting...   [read more]

Chiba beats Mikawa to capture second straight All-Japan Championship title - 9 days ago
The Chiba Jets Funabashi rose to the occasion once again. They set the prevailing pace in the second and third quarters and captured their second consecutive Emperor's Cup with a 89-75 victory over the SeaHorses Mikawa at the 93rd All-Japan Championship final on Sunday. University of Connecticut alum Gavin Edwards (206-F/C-88, college: Connecticut) guided the Jets with a 20-point, 10-rebound performance against his old club. Ryumo Ono sank four of his eight 3-point attempts and scored 18...   [read more]
