B League Round 53: Shiga L-Stars edge Ryukyu GK by one point - Apr 12, 2017

The Regular Season in B League is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 9 rounds. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most exciting game of round 53 in the B League took place in Shiga. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of second-ranked Ryukyu GK (25-26) to sixth ranked Shiga L-Stars (13-38) 89-88 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Ryukyu GK. The best player for the winners was American Craig Brackins (208-87, college: Iowa St.) who scored 24 points and 9 rebounds. Zimbabwean-American Julian Mavunga (203-90, college: Miami, OH, agency: Pensack Sports) chipped in 16 points and 5 rebounds. International guard Ryuichi Kishimoto (176-90) produced 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the guests. Ryukyu GK's coach Tsutomu Isa rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Shiga L-Stars maintains sixth place with 13-38 record, which they share with Sendai 89ers. Ryukyu GK at the other side keeps the second position with 26 games lost. Shiga L-Stars is looking forward to face higher ranked Kyoto Hannar. (#4) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ryukyu GK will play against the league's leader Aishin Sea Horses and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Hitachi Sunrockers maintains third place with 26-25 record having seventeen points less than leader Tochigi Brex. Yokohama BC lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with 36 games lost. They share it with Akita NH. Hitachi Sunrockers will meet Niigata Albirex (#4) on the road in the next round. Yokohama BC will play against the league's second-placed Sanen Neophoenix in Hamamatsu and hope to secure a win.

Host Aishin Sea Horses (41-10) defeated guests from Nagoya (23-28) 72-58. Isaac Butts nailed a double-double by scoring 12 points and 13 rebounds for the winning side. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Aishin Sea Horses have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. They maintain first place with 41-10 record, which they share with Tochigi Brex. Diamond Dolphins lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the fourth position with 28 games lost. Aishin Sea Horses' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Ryukyu GK in Okinawa and it will be for sure the game of the week. Diamond Dolphins will play at home against Osaka Evessa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Chiba. First ranked Tochigi Brex faced 3rd placed Chiba Jets. Guests from Tochigi (41-10) defeated host Chiba Jets (35-16) 72-64. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Chiba Jets. The best player for the winners was Jeffrey Gibbs who had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds. Tochigi Brex maintains first place with 41-10 record, which they share with SeaHorses. Loser Chiba Jets keep the third position with 16 games lost. Tochigi Brex will face Hokkaido L. (#4) in Saporro in the next round.

Other games of round 53 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Akita NH were defeated by Hokkaido L. in Saporro 73-69. Toyama Grouses was beaten by Niigata Albirex at home 71-81. Kyoto Hannar. lost to Osaka Evessa on the opponent's court 74-82. Toyota Alvark outscored Sendai 89ers in a home game 84-63.

Hokkaido L. - Akita NH 66-65

Fifth-ranked Akita Happinets (15-36) made lots of trouble for fourth ranked Hokkaido L. (20-31) in Saporro. Hokkaido L. managed to secure only one-point victory 66-65. However their fans expected easier game. Strangely Akita Happinets outrebounded Hokkaido L. 38-26 including 27 on the defensive glass. American forward Jahmar Thorpe (198-84, college: Houston) saved the victory by scoring 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Asahi Tajima (173-88) contributed with 14 points for the winners. Canadian center Scott Morrison (213-86, college: Portland St.) answered with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 13 rebounds and American forward Leo Lyons (206-87, college: Missouri) added 14 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Akita Happinets.
