Basketball and its rewards- Apr.12, 2010 (by Brandon)

We have now put ourselves in a situation where we must win at least 6 out of the last 8 games to make the playoffs. This is a very attainable task but will take some hard work and dedication. When you are in a predicament like this it shows the character and heart of your team. I believe we have a solid group of guys on our team and with the right focus will allow us to reach this goal. We lost 2 very close games to a Tokyo team that has really been on the incline during the later portion of the season. The game Thursday really shows that hustle plays and free throws cost games. Its something we have been inconsistant at so hopefully its something we can turn around for the remainder of the season.
Have you ever asked yourself what drives you to be the best you can be at this game? What drives you to have such a strong passion for basketball? I asked myself that question and the answer was simple: competition. I love compettion; I really enjoy out working the next person. Something about seeing your opponent frustrated because there is nothing he can do to stop you is a thrill. I enjoy pushing myself until I cant go anymore. I feel like in order to be great at not only basketball, but anything you do in life, you must have passion. The fire inside must stay lit at all times no matter the situation. Not every situation will be picture perfect, but if you hold your head high, stay focused and committed god will reward you. The down side to being so competitive, which I actually think is a good thing, is I cant tolerate a loss whether its by 1 point or 30. Losing pushes me even more. I dont want to leave the gym after a loss.
I was really pulling for Butler to pull of the upset over Duke, but it was a great NCAA national championship. I think Butler showed the nation that mid-majors are just as serious as the top dogs in college basketball so my hat goes off to those guys out there. Now I havent been following the NBA too much, but I'm callin it now - Cleveland will be the world champs. From the highlights I watch every now and then Lebron is playing at a level he has never played at, and with Shaq and Antawn Jamison they will be a problem coming out the East. As long as the role players around Lebron like Mo Williams and Delante West play consistant and solid the east will be a cake walk. Now for the Lakers, they will have problems with Denver. If the bigs for Denver play solid and stay out of foul trouble the Lakers repeat chances may become nonexistant. I'm ready for playoffs to start!
Spring has finally come and I must admit I've been looking forward to the day the sun stays out all day. The cherry blossom trees are a big deal here in the spring time so I took my day off to see what all the fuss was about - I'm not going to lie they are beautiful. My walk through the park actually put me at peace. I had time to think about things going on in my life without any distraction. This job at times can be stressful and you just have to get away clear your head, and last week that walk did that for me.
The game of basketball has done wonderful things for me. I'm able to give back to those who have helped me along the way. It has helped pay for an eduaction, and now it has taken me to countries I used to dream about. I have a few weeks left here in Japan. The season has been long, but has really flown by. So now I must use my next few weeks wisely to take in as much of the country as I can. It's a beautiful place and would recommend Japan to any player. Goodluck to everyone across the world.. Stay blessed.

1st Pro season winding down- Apr.2, 2010 (by Brandon)
Ive been here in Japan for 7 months playing for the Toyama Grouses in the BJ League, and within that time I have experienced a completely different world. Ive been here in Japan for 7 months playing for the Toyama Grouses in the BJ League, and within that time I have experienced a completely different world. Its truly a blessing to play the sport you love and have played your entire life at the professional level. The fans here are amazing and really get into the games. They will make the 8 plus hour drives to support their team no matter if they are winning or losing. The country is beautiful, but coming from Austin, Texas which is central Texas you never experience snow. This year I lived in snow for 4 months straight and I truly believe I have seen enough snow to last me a lifetime. The culture is different in many ways of course the driving on the other side of the road, the people are much smaller, but so are the food and drink portions which is something I will never get used to, in actuality I refuse to get used to I will eat the same amount as I did in the states. The culture is extremely disciplined and conservative which took some time to get used to, but all in all I like Japan. The team Im on has never had a winning season since they have entered the BJ League 3 years ago so it was a challenge that we took on this season to break that losing tradition. We have had our ups and downs but the boosters and fans have given all of their support, and see that we have what it takes to get the team over that hump. Right now we are in 5th place and the top 4 teams on each side of the conference go to the playoffs. We are 1 game out of 4th place so the games this weekend and next week are very important to our playoff push. Wish us luck. The league itself should reconsider how they schedule games because a 52 game season playing each game back to back on sat and sun really isnt an ideal season for any professional athlete, so thats something that might be taken into consideration for seasons to come especially with expansion of the league each year. Ive caught games here and there for march madness I will say no one in America saw the mens bracket turn out how it did so with that being said you have to love March Madness.. My cousin plays for the lady Bears so Im definitely behind them on the women side. Good luck Baylor, and good luck to all participants its a college players dream to play on that big stage. Enjoy your journey and stay blessed...
