Japan claimed the second win in the test series against New Zealand. The Asian team claimed the second straight success when the teams met in Yamagata. Japan managed to overcome a brilliant performance from Jiullian Harmon (185-F-87, college: Stanford) to hold off the Tall Ferns. Japan opened the game with five points in a row but New Zealand quickly responded. They went on a 10:2 run to pull in charge. The Tall Ferns later fired an 11:2 rally that ensured them a 27:23 advantage after ten minutes. Japan took over in the second frame. They unloaded 12 points in a row to surge in front. The hosts built a 47:40 lead at the interval. Jiullian Harmon helped New Zealand to stay within striking distance in the third quarter. The visitors trailed by just 5 points heading into the fourth term. But Japan opened the final period with 7 unanswered points and opened up a double-digit advantage. Jiullian Harmon managed to drag the Tall Ferns within five before Japan escaped for good. Al Mitani (182-F-78) and Ayumi Suzuki (180-C/F-85) scored 18 points each to pace Japan. Jiullian Harmon answered with game-high 34 points for New Zealand. Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe (173-G-79, college: Buffalo) accounted for 11 points in the loss.

The Asian powerhouse showed their ambitions with a confident 30-point victory in the second game in Sendai. The teams will now meet in Yamagata for the series decider. Japan strongly opened the encounter. They fired 25 points in the opening stanza to take a 4-point lead. Japan stressed defense in the second quarter. They limited the Tall Ferns to only 12 points in the frame taking a 43:33 lead at the interval. More to come as Japan took over completely in the third stanza. The hosts unloaded 34 points in the frame and arrived at the final break up by as many as 27 points. Japan and New Zealand traded baskets throughout the final frame as the hosts kept their opponents at distance. Yoshie Sakurada (170-G/F-84) knocked down 19 points to lead the winners.
