Superleague Round 11: Chemidor edges Tabriz by two points - Jan 5, 2017

The most exciting game of round 11 in the Superleague took place in Tabriz. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 5th ranked Tabriz (6-5) to sixth ranked Chemidor (6-5) 65-63 in the game for the fifth place. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Tabriz. The best player for the winners was American guard Daequan Cook (195-87, college: Ohio St.) who scored 15 points and 5 rebounds. Lithuanian power forward Povilas Cukinas (210-83) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds. American forward Sean Williams (208-86, college: Boston Coll.) produced 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Chemidor moved-up to fifth place, which they share with defeated Tabriz. Chemidor's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tehran Azad.
Leader Petrochimi delivered the tenth victory. This time they crushed 8th ranked Kashan (4-7) 82-62. American swingman James White (201-82, college: Cincinnati, agency: Three Eye Sports) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Gerald Robinson contributed with 20 points and 4 assists for the winners. Montenegrin point guard Ivan Koljevic (187-84) answered with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for Kashan. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Petrochimi (10-1) have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place. Newly promoted Kashan dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. They share it with Army. Petrochimi will play against Army (#7) in Tehran in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Kashan will play on the road against Shiraz a.s Pipe and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Azad maintains fourth place with 7-4 record. Shiraz a.s Pipe lost their eleventh game in a row. Newly promoted team still closes the standings with 11 games lost. Azad's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Tehran to the arena Chemidor.

It was an exceptional evening for Mohammad Hassanzadeh who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Naft Abadan moved-up to second place, which they share with Arak. Army at the other side keeps the seventh position with seven games lost. Naft Abadan's next round opponent will be league's second-placed Arak at home and it will be for sure the game of the week. Army will play against the league's leader Petrochimi (#1) in Bandar Imam and hope to win that game.

In the last game of round 11 Gorgan was defeated by Arak in a road game 88-74.

Tabriz - Chemidor 63-65

The most exciting game of round 11 in the Superleague took place in Tabriz. Azad - Shiraz a.s Pipe 92-57

Bottom-ranked Shiraz a.s Pipe (0-11) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 92-57 loss to fourth ranked Azad (7-4) in Tehran on Monday evening. Azad shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 57.1 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The game in Tehran supposed to be also worth to mention about. Third ranked Naft Abadan (8-3) played at the court of 7th ranked Army (4-7). Naft Abadan smashed Army 79-55. The game without a history. Naft Abadan led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Army to just 7 points in first quarter. Naft Abadan forced 22 Army turnovers. It was an exceptional evening for international Mohammad Hassanzadeh (203-90, agency: Three Eye Sports) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds. American-Ivorian guard Doron Perkins (189-83, college: Santa Clara) accounted for 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. His fellow American import point guard Gerald Robinson (185-89, college: Georgia) contributed with 20 points and 4 assists for the winners. Four Petrochimi players scored in double figures. Montenegrin point guard Ivan Koljevic (187-84) answered with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and international swingman Mohammad Shahrian (193) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Kashan. There was no surprise when 9th ranked Shahrdari Gorgan (2-9) was defeated on the road by second ranked Arak (8-3) 88-74. The game was mostly controlled by Arak. Shahrdari Gorgan was better in third quarter 22-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Arak dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Shahrdari Gorgan's 30. Arak forced 19 Shahrdari Gorgan turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. It was an exceptional evening for the former international Hamed Afagh (193-83) who led the winners and scored 20 points (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). American-Georgian forward Quinton Hosley (201-84, college: Fresno St.) accounted for 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side. American-Guyanese Rawle Marshall (201-82, college: Oakland) came up with 20 points and Croatian power forward Filip Toncinic (212-84, college: Texas A&M-CC) added 16 points and 9 rebounds respectively for Shahrdari Gorgan in the defeat. Five Arak and four Shahrdari Gorgan players scored in double figures. Shahrdari Gorgan's coach rotated ten players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Arak maintains second place with 8-3 record having just two points less than leader Petrochimi, which they share with Naft Abadan. Shahrdari Gorgan lost their third game in a row. They keep the ninth position with nine games lost. Arak's next round opponent will be Naft Abadan (#3) on the road, which may be the game of the day. Shahrdari Gorgan will play against Tabriz (#5) and hope to win that game.

Guaros de Lara (LPB) signed 23-year old American center Robert Upshaw (213-116kg-94, college: Washington). He played last season at Chemidor in Iranian Superleague. Upshaw managed to play in four leagues in three countries last year (!!!). In three Superleague games he had 8.3ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.7bpg. Naft Abadan (Superleague) strengthened their roster with addition of 33-year old guard Steven Burtt (189-84kg-84, college: Iona). He is a dual citizen owning American and Ukrainian passport.
