Superleague Round 14: Petrochimi beats Zanjan in the most crucial game of the week - Jan 16, 2013

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Bandar Imam. First ranked Petrochimi faced 4th ranked Zanjan. Host Petrochimi (13-1) defeated guests from Zanjan (8-7) 92-75. Petrochimi have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 13-1 record. Zanjan at the other side keeps the fourth place with seven games lost. Petrochimi are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Naft Sepahan (#10) in Tehran in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Zanjan will play at home against the league's second-placed Mahram (#2) in Tehran and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in Tehran. Ninth ranked Petrochimi Mahshahr (4-10) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging higher ranked Azad (7-6) 76-75 on Monday evening. The former international center Mohammad Shahsavand (210-77) saved the victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 15 rebounds. Povilas Cukinas contributed with 20 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. The former international power forward Mousa Nabipour (212-83) replied with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 13 rebounds for Azad. Petrochimi Mahshahr moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Al Badr. Azad at the other side keeps the fifth position with six games lost. Petrochimi Mahshahr will play against Esteghlal (#9) in Qeshm in the next round. Azad will play on the road against Al Badr (#8) in Banddar Kong and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Esfahan. Local Foolad Mahan (11-3) outscored 8th ranked Esteghlal (3-11) 93-53 on Monday night. Foolad Mahan maintains third position with 11-3 record having just two points less than leader Petrochimi. Esteghlal lost eighth consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth place with 11 games lost. They share the position with Naft Sepahan. Foolad Mahan will meet Shahrdari Gorgan (#6) on the road in the next round. Esteghlal will play against Petrochimi Mahshahr and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 14 Al Badr was crushed by Mahram in Tehran 100-66. Naft Sepahan was beaten by Gorgan at home 74-80.



Mahram - Al Badr 100-66

There was no surprise in Tehran where 7th ranked Al Badr (4-10) was crushed by second ranked Mahram (12-2) 100-66 on Monday. The game was mostly controlled by Mahram. Al Badr managed to win third quarter 30-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Mahram forced 29 Al Badr turnovers and outrebounded them 50-24 including a 34-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. International point guard Sajjad Mashayekhi (180-94) scored 20 points and 9 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and international forward Mohammad Samad Nikkhah Bahrami (199-83) chipped in 22 points during the contest. Four Mahram players scored in double figures. Siamak Torabikhah responded with 16 points and Saman Taherpour scored 13 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Mahram have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position with 12-2 record behind leader Petrochimi. Loser Al Badr keeps the seventh place with ten games lost. They share the position with Petrochimi Mahshahr. Mahram will meet Zanjan (#4) on the road in the next round. Al Badr will play against Azad in Tehran and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Naft Sepahan - Gorgan 74-80

No shocking result in a game in Tehran where seventh ranked Shahrdari Gorgan (5-9) defeated bottom-ranked Naft Sepahan (3-11) 80-74 on Sunday. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Naft Sepahan won third quarter 22-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a great shooting night for Shahrdari Gorgan especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 66.7 percentage. Guard Mojtaba Bani Aghil (190-81) scored 16 points and 8 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and point guard Kaveh Nourafza (180-86) chipped in 23 points and 5 steals during the contest. The former international guard Amir Amini (189-84) responded with 22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals and the former international point guard Iman Zandi (188-81) scored 20 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Naft Sepahan's coach Mohsen Shah-Ali rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Shahrdari Gorgan have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place. Loser Naft Sepahan dropped to the bottom position with 11 games lost. They share it with Esteghlal. Shahrdari Gorgan will meet at home higher ranked Foolad Mahan (#3) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Naft Sepahan will play against the league's leader Petrochimi (#1) in Bandar Imam and hope to secure a win.
