Rich Smith (6'7''-F/C) a 250lbs Center/Power Forward currently playing with the Salem Sabres ABA professional basketball team will soon be shedding his Sabres uniform and heading overseas to play with the Indonesia Warriors. Smith was born in Subic Bay, Philippines but grew up in Bremerton, Washington. He graduated from Olympic High School and went on to play basketball for Concordia University from 2007-2009. In 2009 Smith transferred to George Fox University where he played until 2011. While at George Fox Smith pursued a degree in Chemistry and Civil Engineering. Smith signed to play with the Salem Sabres in mid July. He came into the Sabres camp ready to work hard. Smith only played two games as a Sabre and contributed 17 points and 9 rebounds in those games. Head Coach Willie Freeman had this to say about Smith. "Rich is a young up and coming athlete who is putting in the work to further his professional career. We wish him well with his future endeavors". When Smith got the news of the opportunity to go overseas the whole Sabres camp was excited for him. Owner Rhonda Alexander "This is one of the goals of the organization, to help local talent gain that recognition to hopefully get a shot at an overseas deal, D League or even the NBA. We did not think it would happen in our Inaugural season, but none the less we are proud of Rich" Smith said: "I am excited to play overseas. It's a new opportunity for me and to get to wake up doing something I love every day so I cannot complain. I love the opportunity to be able to travel to different countries and experience their culture, it's amazing! I like the fact the coach I will have has had NBA coaching experience, is an American and has been in constant contact with me. I feel that is what drew me to the Indonesia Warriors. The family like atmosphere is the same as we have with the Sabers. I got the chance to play overseas because I was actually born in the Philippines so I am an Asian import not an American even though I have been in America all my life. I feel God wanted me to be on this path in life and I feel that I grew a lot while with the Sabers. I got a lot of guidance from Coach Freeman and fellow teammate Cory Largent about playing overseas. They helped a lot in preparing me along with strong support from the upper management of the Sabres organization. It helps a lot when you have people who treat you like family around you. I am just ready to focus purely on basketball instead of school and hoops. I am wondering what my ceiling will be as Coach Freeman was just starting to tap into my potential". The Sabres will be playing its first game without Smith on December 14th, 7pm at Chemeketa Community College Bldg #7. This will be the Salem Sabres first time match up with the Olympia Rise.
