Womens basketball has returned to Indonesia after a four-year hiatus with a three-series event scheduled for three big cities in the nation. Five teams comprise the new league, named the Jawa Pos For Her Womens National Basketball League (WNBL) Indonesia 2012. The Surabaya Fever led the league after the first series ended in Surabaya, East Java, on March 18, racking up 261 points in eight games. The hometown team was followed by the Sriitex Dragons from Surakarta, Central Java, with 205 points and the Tomang Sakti Mighty Bees from Jakarta with 186 points. The league will shift to Jakarta for the second series from April 4 to 8 before traveling to Yogyakarta for a third series from April 25 to 26. The final match of the 2012 season is slated for April 28 in Yogyakarta. It is about time to bring it back, WNBL commissioner Azrul Ananda said on the sidelines of a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday. I am aware that to sustain a sport event requires a commercial orientation, other than development. For now, we have to set aside the commercial orientation part and focus on the development of the sport, Azrul, who also heads the mens National Basketball League (NBL), added. Indonesia first established a womens basketball league in 1999 with eight teams. The league, the Womens Main Basketball Competition (Kobanita) had a fluctuating number of teams throughout its existence due to continuing financial problems. Kobanita began with 12 teams, although that number declined to six by 2008 before the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) halted the league. Azrul also the director of PT DBL Indonesia, which runs the Development Basketball League student basketball competition said that many parties, including Perbasi, had asked him to bring back a womens league after his company took over the NBL. The WNBL is run under the NBL, which is itself in its third year under PT DBL Indonesia. Sritex Dragon coach Wempi Wiyanto said that the WNBL gave new hope for grooming women athletes. We have a lot of clubs here, but what were lacking is a national-scale competition, which is strongly needed to shape-up our athletes mentality. In the Southeast Asian Games in November, for example, the national womens squad made its first appearance since 2003, finishing last behind Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Myanmar. Wempi said that his players were perhaps more emotional then male basketballers and required a different coaching style. However, their fighting spirit, even when they are sick, is a positive that will allow Indonesia to have a great womens team some day. The WNBLs Jakarta series will be held at the Basketball Hall of the Bung Karno Sports Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, while the Yogyakarta series and final will be held in the GOR UNY Yogyakarta sports hall.

In the last games of the regular Season Tomang Sakti Mighty Bees Jakarta won the Season with 12-3 record due to 45:44 win against Surabaya Emdee Fever. Three years after the demise of the Indonesian Womens Basketball Competition (Kobanita), the WNBL is trying to breathe new life into womens basketball. Organizers said around 1,000 spectators turned up to the stadium to watch the debut game. The Sritex Dragons beat Rajawali-Tunas Mojang 54-42, and host Surabaya Fever defeated the Tomang Sakti Mighty Bees 58-51. Out of the five-team league, the only team that didnt take the court on opening day was Sahabat Semarang. We lost the opening game, but Im really grateful that finally we have another womens league, Mojang manager Teddy Heryadi told the WNBL Web site. The fans enthusiasm showed me that we have a chance to be bigger. Teddy, who managed Rajawali for seven years during the Kobanita days, recalled the previous leagues last series in Bandung in 2008, which was attended by a small group of about 20 fans. Tickets were free and the matches were held at night, but still, only few fans came to the stadium, he said. The sight of a thousand fans was a huge relief, he said. Its still not as many as the mens NBL, but its a good start, Teddy said. The Indonesian Basketball Federation (Perbasi) disbanded the six-team Kobanita due to a lack of funding, sponsors and fans in 2008. But when Perbasi reached a deal with the Development Basketball League for the NBL in 2010, the organizer was also tasked with reviving the womens competition. Womens Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Linda Agum Gumelar threw up the first tipoff, later voicing hope that the WNBL would last. The most important thing now for the clubs and organizers is to make the people aware of the league so more will come to watch, Linda said. The crowds support fired up the players, who in return gave them something to watch. Sritex forward Catryn Clorissa scored the first basket of the league, and the Central Java club left Mojang struggling to catch up for the rest of the game. Catryn scored a game-high 18 points and finished with four rebounds, while center Diana Pusphaningtyas led Mojang with 13 points. The girls were a bit nervous at the start, since for most of them it was their professional debut, Sritex coach Wempi Wiyanto said. The pressure is always high in a professional game, so were happy to win the opener. The Fevers bench players make the difference in the second match, scoring a combined seven points in the close contest while all of the Mighty Bees points came from its five starters. What we learned from the game was that we were lacking squad depth, Mighty Bees coach Hendrawan Kaluku said. Fever guard Yunita Sugianto finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while forward Mega Nanda Perdana Putri dominated under the basket with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Even a game-high 19 points from center Jacklien Ibo couldnt win the opener for the Mighty Bees. The WNBL Surabaya series will run until Sunday, after which teams will go to Jakarta for the second series from April 4-8. Yogyakarta will host the third and final series on April 25-26 before two top teams vie for the trophy on April 28.
