Controversy in State team selection needs to be resolved - Dec 3, 2016

Players representing Indian team normally walk into their state team in any sport. But that doesn't look the case in Kerala basketball. In a major decision, the Kerala Basketball Association (KBA) has decided to omit star Indian international Basil Philip from the state camp for the national championship to be held in Puducherry in January. The state team is normally selected from the players attending the camp.
What went against Basil was his absence from the State Basketball Championship which concluded in Manjeri on Sunday. Basil and his Customs and Central Excise mates had been representing Ernakulam in the state championship for a few years now. However, this year they wanted to turn up for Malappuram and requested for an NOC from the Ernakulam District Basketball Association (EDBA). But EDBA rejected their request which meant that no Central Excise player including Basil were able to take part in the state championship.
The KBA's rule states that for a player, after missing the state championship, to be considered for the national championship, he or she should submit an application form showing his willingness to represent Kerala. It is then up to the selection committee to decide whether or not to include that player based on his or her calibre.
However, Basil did not submit his application before the selection meeting which happened on Sunday before the finals of the state championship. "The state championship is the tournament where all the best players of Kerala play and it is based on the performance in that tournament that we choose players for the nationals. In the case of some very good players, we give exception and consider their case provided they submit an application showing their willingness to represent Kerala. We have not got any application from Basil showing his willingness to participate. We had to go by the rule book and couldn't consider Basil, " said KA Saleem, chairman of selectors.

For the future of the game, it is definitely advisable for both the players and the related officials to avoid such situations and make clear the relevant regulations that govern the administration of the game. While it is true that the interest of the Association in ensuring that the best of players participate and represent thier respective home districts has to be given prioroty, the option to let some of the players to represent neighbouring or other districts is also necessary due to the concentration of good players in the districts of Trivandrum & Kochi because of departmental teams. Ideally, a restrictive but proactive option to safeguard the local Associations & the departmental / college team players must be thought of and such situations avoided.

I was in the check-in line at the New Delhi airport one afternoon when I heard some commotion from the far end. From the distance, I couldn't identify the cause of the hysteria that followed: men and women screaming in jubilation, forgetting their usual travel routine to chase down a celebrity. It didn't take long for the message to reach the lady behind my check-in counter: Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket captain and nationwide heartthrob, had graced the airport with his presence. He to...   [read more]

On 18th March 2017, the most watched event on the CBS network on American television was a basketball game with more than 7 million viewers. That was three times more than the next watched show, the film Fast Five and four times more viewers than another basketball game airing at the same time on the ABC television network. What is interesting was that the second game was between Lebron James and his champion Cleveland Cavaliers and the powerful Los Angeles Clippers, packed with stars lik...   [read more]
