 | Al Jaleeb Tea City Fives regains IBS League Title at Sharjah | |
|
| | | The two month long Indian Basketball league season has come to an end at Al Shaab Sports Club, Sharjah. Al Jaleeb Tea City Fives celebrated the Indian Basketball league title with an impressive 71-56 win over the defending champions Hoofbeatz Hustlers in the finals of the 3rd Indian Basketball league Tournament organised by Indian Basketball Society U.A.E.
It was a seesaw battle right from the beginning as City Fives led by seven points after the starting frame, 18-11, but the defending champions coming from behind later on. Hustlers tied up things at 29 at halftime.
Brilliant burst in third quarter does City Fives win
Just like it did against Hoopers in the semi finals, City Fives launched an all out attack in the third quarter. The move took Hustlers by surprise and before they could regroup City Fives surged ahead into 22 points lead, 53-31. The City Fives men apart from being solid at defence kept scoring at a steady pace. City Fives rebound collection, especially the defensive was excellent. Junior Indian player Bimal Raj and University player Mathew combined well not only in defence but also ably supported Manoj Abraham, the current state player from Kerala, who top scored for the winners with 20 points. Hustler's players found it hard to contain Manoj Abraham, who helped City Fives hold an upper hand.
Shankar, the Tamil Nadu State player, who was rightfully chosen as the Best Play Maker of the tournament was the only threat City fives encountered in the finals. Shankar battled alone in the offence and his perfect shooting thrilled the crowd.
Ajeeth Sugunan and Mathew, both with four fouls apiece, didn't penetrate much into the rival area in the final session, which brought about a slump in the City Fives scoring rate. Hustlers shooters tried their best to use the opportunity to bring down the lead, but the City Fives defenders were in no mood to let the advantage slip away. Arafat fired three pointers thrice in the final session for Hustlers who led the quarter 25-18.
Earlier, Hoopers, Dubai defeated DPS, Sharjah 63-40 to secure the third place. Ivan top scored for Hoopers with 23 points and Shajahan netted 16 points.

 | NBA Camp - Is India gearing up for this unique event? | |
|
| | | Kyle Korver (Utah Jazz), Ronny Turiaf (L.A. Lakers), Pat Garrity (Orlando Magic) and Linton Johnson (Phoenix Sons) are all familiar names to Indian basketball buffs who follow the American National Basketball Association (NBA) league live on sports channels.
Theses stars will be among the 53 players from 15 countries playing in the NBA held in India for the first time next month as part of a global basketball development and community outreach programme to promote the sport as well as encourage positive social change in the areas of education, health and wellness in local communities.
The event, billed as Basketball without Borders Asia, will be held at the American Embassy School here from July 3-6, 2008 under the auspices of the NBA, Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) and the Basketball Federation of India.
'The NBA and its players are afforded a unique opportunity to use basketball as a forum and stress the values of our game to influence social change,' said NBA Commissioner David Stern. 'Each Basketball without Borders camp unites a diverse group of people to initiate a global dialogue on important issues such as healthy living, education and HIV/AIDS awareness.'
Joining the NBA players as camp coaches are NBA Legend Sam Perkins, NBA coach Don Casey and Don Newman of the San Antonio Spurs. Gregg Farnam of the Minnesota Timberwolves will take part as the camp's athletic trainer. Houston Rockets assistant coach Dean Cooper will oversee as camp director for the fourth consecutive year. NBA great Dominique Wilkins will also be here to promote the event and also to enhance the popularity of the NBA.
'FIBA is very satisfied with its long-term collaboration with the NBA. Basketball without Borders is an invaluable educational, social and health-awareness tool for all youth, where they also showcase their skills and learn from some of the best coaches and players,' said FIBA Secretary-General and IOC member Patrick Baumann. 'We are pleased to be going to India for the first time, where Basketball without Borders will be able to further a growing interest in basketball.'
BFI secretary-general Harish Sharma sees the event as a great opportunity to popularise the sport in the country.
Basketball without Borders has featured over 250 current and former NBA players, coaches and team personnel from 30 different teams who have served as camp coaches and mentors for over 1200 young athletes from more than 100 countries and territories on five continents. Last year, the event took place in Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Paris and Johannesburg.
It remans to be seen how this event would help generate the much needed hype for the pro league plans of the BFI schedled in October. Several foreign players and also players of Indian orgin are eager to be part of the pro league but there seems to be no clear entry pont with none of the teams coming ot in the open to absorb such international talents. Only time will tell perhaps... |
