CBA Round 4: Shandong Bulls keep a leadership position - Dec 2, 2012

Round 4 means everything may happen in CBA as the season just started. There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with extra overtimes, favorites losing the games and even winless team recording their first victory.

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Shandong Bulls as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Shandong Bulls edged bottom-ranked Jilin Tigers in Jinan 110-108. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 33-20. But Jilin Tigers won second period 25-24. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Shandong Bulls dominated down low during the game scoring 80 of its points in the paint compared to Jilin Tigers' 46. Jordanian forward Zaid Abbas (203-83) fired 24 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners. American point guard Pooh Jeter (180-83, college: Portland) chipped in 24 points and 6 assists. American guard Dewarick Spencer (193-82, college: Arkansas St., agency: Higher Vision Sports) produced 29 points and 5 assists for lost side. Jilin Tigers' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Shandong Bulls have a solid four-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Jilin Tigers at the other side still closes the standings with four games lost. They share the position with Qingdao E.. Jilin Tigers will play next round against Qingdao Eagles trying to get back on the winning streak. Shandong Bulls will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Liaoning Hunters in Yingkou.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Urumqi. Third ranked Xinjiang Flying Tige faced one of their biggest challengers Bayi Rockets. Host Xinjiang Flying Tige (3-1) defeated guests from Ningbo (2-2) 89-80. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Worth to mention a great performance of international point guard Tal Co (191-91) who helped to win the game recording 23 points and 5 rebounds. Bateer Mengke contributed with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. The former international center ZhiZhi Wang (215-77) replied with 27 points and 6 rebounds for Bayi Rockets. Bayi Rockets' coach let to play eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Xinjiang Flying Tige moved-up to second place, which they share with Guandong ST and Fujian QB. Bayi Rockets at the other side dropped to the eighth position with two games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Xinjiang Flying Tige will play against Shanghai Sharks (#14) at home in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Bayi Rockets will play against Shanxi Zhongyu (#12) in Taiyuan and hope to get back on the winning track.
Shanxi Zhongyu can celebrate their first win this season after two consecutive loses. The victory is especially important as they defeated much higher ranked Foshan (2-2)on the road game in Foshan 120-112 on Sunday. Worth to mention a great performance of Charles Gaines who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 40 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds (on 17-of-22 shooting from the field). Shanxi Zhongyu's coach Francisco Aurioles used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side Rashad McCants responded with 21 points and 5 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws). It was the only win of guest team this round and in all other games host teams recorded victories. Despite that victory Shanxi Zhongyu went down to twelfth position due to points difference. Loser Foshan dropped to the eighth place with two games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. Shanxi Zhongyu will meet at home higher ranked Bayi Rockets (#8) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Foshan will play against Zhejiang Guangsha Lions in Hangzhou and hope to secure a win.
Shanghai Sharks can celebrate their first win this season after three consecutive loses. They used home court advantage to defeat Qingdao Eagles (0-4) 93-77. The winners were led by Wei Liu who had that evening a double-double by scoring 28 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Shanghai Sharks (1-3) left bottom position moving up to thirteenth place, which they share with Guangsha L. It was Qingdao Eagles' fourth loss in a row. They still closes the standings with four games lost. Shanghai Sharks' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Xinjiang Flying Tige in Urumqi and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Qingdao Eagles will play at home against Jilin Tigers (#16) in Changchun and hope to get finally their first victory.
Bottom-ranked Jiangsu Dragons (0-3) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 113-87 loss to seventh ranked Guandong Tigers (3-1) in Dongguan on Sunday evening. Guandong Tigers will face Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank (#7) in Hangzhou in the next round where they are favorite. Jiangsu Dragons will play at home against Fujian (#4) in Jinjiang and look forward to get finally their first victory.

Rest of the games of round 4 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
DongGuan L. was defeated by Zhejiang CB in Hangzhou 103-98. Fujian QB beat Guangsha L. at home 93-88. TianJin S. was destroyed by Liaoning H. on the opponent's court 100-81.



Guandong ST - Jiangsu D. 113-87

Bottom-ranked Jiangsu Dragons (0-3) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 113-87 loss to seventh ranked Guandong Tigers (3-1) in Dongguan on Sunday evening. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. The game without a history. Guandong Tigers led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Guandong Tigers forced 20 Jiangsu Dragons turnovers. Strangely Jiangsu Dragons outrebounded Guandong Tigers 49-32 including a 20-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. International Jianlian Yi (212-87) fired 26 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. International ShiPeng Wang (198-83) chipped in 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Shanxi Zhongyu can celebrate their first win this season after two consecutive loses. The victory is especially important as they defeated much higher ranked Foshan (2-2)on the road game in Foshan 120-112 on Sunday. Shanxi Zhongyu looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Foshan's players. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Charles Gaines (201-81, college: S.Mississippi) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 40 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds (on 17-of-22 shooting from the field) and the other American import swingman Marcus Williams (200-86, college: Arizona, agency: Interperformances) who added 37 points (!!!), 7 rebounds and 6 assists (on 14-of-18 shooting from the field) during the contest. Shanxi Zhongyu's coach Francisco Aurioles used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Shanghai Sharks can celebrate their first win this season after three consecutive loses. They used home court advantage to defeat Qingdao Eagles (0-4) 93-77. The game without a history. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Qingdao Eagles' 34 and made 32-of-32 charity shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. They outrebounded Qingdao Eagles 55-34 including a 39-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. Shanghai Sharks brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. 35 personal fouls committed by Qingdao Eagles helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The winners were led by international point guard Wei Liu (190-80) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 28 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his twelve free throws !!!) and Taiwanese power forward Wen-Ting Tseng (203-84) supported him with 18 points and 7 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws). Even 23 points and 9 rebounds (made all of his fifteen free throws !!!) by American swingman Tracy McGrady (203-79) did not help to save the game for Qingdao Eagles. There was an upset in Hangzhou where higher ranked DongGuan Leopards (2-2) were defeated by eleventh ranked Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank (2-1) 103-98 on Sunday. DongGuan Leopards trailed by 11 points after 3 quarters before a 22-11 run in the last quarter tied the game at the end of regular time, But then they lost eventually overtime period 8-13. Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to DongGuan Leopards' 40 and made 20-of-20 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. DongGuan Leopards were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American power forward Josh Boone (208-84, college: Connecticut) fired a double-double by scoring 22 points and 18 rebounds for the winners. The former international swingman SongLin Gong (195-81) chipped in 24 points. Four Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank players scored in double figures. Liaoning H. - TianJin S. 100-81

There was a minor upset in Yingkou where 8th ranked TianJin Steel (2-2) was rolled over by tenth ranked Liaoning Hunters (2-1) 100-81 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Liaoning Hunters. TianJin Steel was better in fourth quarter 26-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Liaoning Hunters made 19-of-19 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. Shenzhen, China - The NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars (6-2) finished a successful trip by defeating China (4-5) for the third time on the trip, by 84-75 before 7,528 at the Bao'an Gymnasium in Shenzhen.
