Guess what! The Asian Championship team was the team that showed up today as China defeated France 59-53 in the World U-17 Championship in Kaunas, Lithuania.

China led France led France 14-11 after one quarter but it trailed 30-23 at the half. China excelled in the third quarter and led 47-46 at its end. It continued its strong play in the fourth quarter, outscoring France 12-7. Han Delong (192-F-95) scored 20 points for China, hitting 6 of 9 three-pointers. Zhou Qi (217-C-96) had 18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Zhao Jiwei had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and no turnovers. Liu Bo had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Heng Yifeng, China's fifth star, shot 0 for 7 but played 36 minutes. Zhao Jiwei played 33 minutes, Han Delong played 38 minutes, Zhou Qi played 35 minutes and Liu Bo played 40 minutes as China used its five stars almost the entire game.

France outrebounded China 43-34, but France had 15 turnovers to 12 for China. Arthur Rozenfeld, Damian Inglis, and Petr Cornele had 10 points for France. and Jean Biog had 9. Inglis grabbed 13 rebounds.

I wish I could tell you that the Asian championship team will show up again against the Czech Republic tomorrow, but of course I can't. This is an immature team -- 17-year-olds tend to be immature -- and the team is in a foreign environment. The game is played more intensely by juniors in the West than in Chinese junior competition. So it is not surprising that this team is inconsistent.
