China - Italy 84-73 - July
8, 2002
Another loss of Italian National team in the last
game of Nations Cup. This time, the Azzurri have been beaten by
China 84-73, ending the tournment, won by the host team, at the
third place. The final result of this game, played in Dong Guang
City, has been conditioned by the absences of Podestΰ, Cittadini,
Pecile and Righetti, due to injuries, and for sure the larger size
of Chinese centers have been important too. The best losing effort
came this time from Michele
Mian (195-G-73), who scored 22 points, being the only one to go
on in scoring during all game.

Chinese National Team lost
the final game of Shuang Lai Cup to Australia - Jul 4, 2002
Chinese National Team surprisingly lost to strong Australia in the
last day of the Shuang Lai Cup. China was considered as the main
favorite of the tournament, and they confirmed a good shape by
beating Yugoslavia (ranked much higher than China in Eurobasket
poll). But in the last game the superiority of Australian team was
very obvious as they beat China 82-68. Australia started evry well
with a lead. However then Chinese players were able to catch up and
get double-digit advantage. However Australian team showed a lot of
couraeg trailing back by 1 point at the end of third quarter. The
last period eblonged only to Australia, who won it 24-9.
Chris Anstey (213-C-75) was the top scored for the Boomers with
22 points while John Rillie had 21 including five three-pointers.
Chinese star Yao Ming (recently NBA Draft No 1 pick) was ferquently
doubled, and stopped by Wade Helliwell and Ben Melmeth. He was able
to score just 9 points, so way less than in previous games. The
other NBA player Menk Bateer had just eight points and six rebounds.
Italian NT defeats China -
Jul 2, 2002
Yao
Ming was overwhelming, but the single NBA draft top pick was not
enough to crib a victory for the sluggish Chinese team, who lost
82-65 to Italy on Monday.
Yao, who scored 28 points, gave hard time to Italy's center
combination,
Alessandro Cittadini (207-C/F-79, agent: Ferraccini Vittorio),
2.10-meter Galanda Giacomo and 2.11-meter Marconato Denis, who
committed 10 fouls in total on him.
In earlier match, Australia ousted European champions Yugoslavia
79-68 at the international basketball tournament in Taiyuan, capital
city of Shanxi province.
The best play of the night came at the third quarter of China- Italy
match when Yao scrambled up a loose ball and hit a basket while he
was sitting on the floor.
Yao, who was selected by the Houston Rockets with the No.1 pick on
Thursday morning at Beijing time, got nine points at the first
10-minute quarter, and scored 16 points of China's first 25 points,
to gain the lead midway into the second quarter.
Italy replied with their accurate long-ranged shots as the Europeans
created open shots easily through Chinese shabby defence, buried 14
three-pointers to take the good of the game.
China's other two NBA players missed the match. The Dallas Mavericks
forward Wang Zhizhi is in the United States, training for the Summer
League, while the Denver Nuggets' center Menk Bateer injured his
waist in training.
Detroit Pistons center Ratko Varda and Denver Nuggets rented player
Aleksandar Radojevic were in the squad of the Yugoslavian second
team.
Australia, who lost the World Championship berth to New Zealand, led
for the most time of the match to beat the Yugoslavs.
The four teams will play a round-robin two-stop tournament from July
1-7 at Taiyuan and Dongguan, Guangdong province.
China - Italy 65-82 (15-20, 36-28, 50-55)

China Beat Yugoslavia 92-78
in Four-Nation Basketball Tournament - Jul 3, 2002
The NBA center duo, Yao Ming and
Meng Bateer (210-C-75, agent: Duffy Bill), led China to a 92-78
victory over European champions Yugoslavia on Tuesday at the
Shuanglai Four-Nation men's basketball invitation in Taiyuan, Shanxi
Province.
Yao Ming, who will go to the Houston Rockets as the top pick next
season, stamped his domination inside with 27 points, with his
national teammate Bateer, who played for the Denver Nuggets last
season, added seven points in less than 10-minute plays.
The Chinese team learned fast from Monday's loss to Italy, setting
up better defence and shooting more long-ranged baskets to beat the
Yugoslavian second team.
"We had only four days of practice before we came here. We are not
in good shape," said Yugoslavian coach Miodrag Baletic. "But China
deserved to win. They played better tonight."
"We are clever on defence tonight," said Chinese head coach Wang
Fei. "European teams are different from Asians. They play more
aggressive defence. We were not acquainted with such defence
yesterday when we lost to Italy."
China will play Australia, who defeated Italy 79-66 in an earlier
game, on Wednesday to call up the first part of the two-stop
tournament. Teams will move to Dongguan of Guangdong province to
continue the matches.

Asian Championships 2001
Day 8, July 28, 2001: Final: China Lebanon 97-63 (Yao Ming
16+11reb, Menk Bateer 17, Liu Yu-dong 13, Wang Zhi-zhi 10 - Fadi
Khatib 18)
With the self-claimed "Asian Dream Team" and the huge home
court advantage, China slammed Lebanon 97-63 in the 21st ABC
championship game and made a strong statement that they are still
Asia's best. China wins the 12th title in their 14 appearances in the
ABC Championship. Since 1975, China failed to reach the championship
game only twice, finishing third both in 1986 and 1997.
With the expected opponent South Korea losing in the semi, China had
no problem dealing with Lebanon in light mood, jumpstarting to a 22-10
opening lead and led as many as 43 points. Minutes into the final
quarter, China head coach Wang Fei had cleared all his bench. Chang
Chen, who served a two-game suspension after initiating a
bench-clearing brawl in China's last game with Lebanon, also played
with 2:30 remaining.
Day 7, July 27, 2001: Semifinals: China Syria 94-55 (Hu
Wei-dong 20, Yao Ming 17 -)
Without surprise, China breezed past Syria 94-55 and went to the
championship game. China led by as many as 28 points in the second
half.
Day 6, July 25, 2001: Taiwan China 71-100 (Yang Yu-min 18,
Tien Lei 11, Chou Hong-yu 11, Tsun Wen-ding 8, Chen Chih-chung 8 -
Wang Zhizhi 22+8reb, Gong Xiao-bin 19, Lee Nan 17, Yao Ming 14+7reb)
Either China was being kind or Chinese Taipei really played well. The
Chinese exerted just enough effort to beat the Taiwanese, 100-79, and
sweep Group I. Taiwan head coach Lee Yun-kwang's " 2-1-2 "
zone defense was not enough to contain China's "Multiple
Towers". China used their height advantage with consecutive 11-0
and 13-0 runs. Before halftime, the score was already 61-33 and out of
reach.
Day
5, July 24, 2001: China
- Japan 126-67 (Wang 22+8reb, Yao Ming 13+8reb, Gong Xiao-bin 17, Hu Wei-dong 16,
Menk Bateer 12 -)
The Chinese hardly missed the services of Cheng Zhang, who was slapped
a two-game suspension for his involvement in the Lebanon-China melee. Dallas Maverick Wang Zhi-zhi had 22 points and 8
rebounds to lead China breeze by Japan, 126-67, with an astonishing 77
% from the field. Wang made all of his four three-point attempts.
Day 4, July 23, 2001: Lebanon China
67-76 (Fadi
El Khatib 20, Fahed 10 Wang 23+10reb, Weidong 15, Li Nan 10, Liu
Dong 10, Yao Ming 10)
The game between China
and Lebanon, which China won 87-76,
ended in the biggest brawl in ABC Championship history. In the
bench clearing fight that also involved numerous fans, at least three
Lebanon players were injured and taken to the hospital. Both teams are
waiting for further announcement and punishment from the Asian
Basketball Confederation. Emotions ran high in the whole game, in
which you can see coaches of both teams screaming at refs and players
throwing cheap-shots again and again at each other. With two seconds
remaining and the outcome set, the worst thing happened. First-time
Chinese NT member Chang Chen threw punches at one of the Lebanon guard
and the two began fighting. Immediately players from two teams poured
onto the court to join the brawl. Chinese forward Liu Yu-dong also
confronted Lebanon center Joe Vogel at the center court. To support
their home team, crowds began throwing mineral water bottles and other
objects at Lebanese players with no mercy. Within minutes, the whole
stadium exploded into a war zone. The most unbelievable thing is, due
to the lack of securities, the fight lasted more than 10 minutes. It's
said that either Liu Yu-dong or Lee Nan picked up a scissor from team
trainer and tried to stab the Lebanese players. Finally both teams
finally were taken to the locker room. And the post-game press
conference was cancelled. Lebanon head coach Johnny Neumann complained
to the media and threatened pulling out of the tournament if the ABC
failed to provide 100% security. After the protest from the Lebanese
side, ABC president Cheng Man-kee said he will decide the final
punishment after the technical committee completed the investigation
report.
China's rookie NT member Chang Chen was suspended for two games
because of initiating the confrontation between China and Lebanon team
in the previous day's competition, the ABC announced on July 24.
Lebanon's guard XXX was also "severely reprimanded" by the
ABC. However the ABC takes no action on Liu Yu-dong and Lee Nan, both
of whom accused stabbing Lebanon players in the confrontation with a
scissor. In the bench-clearing brawl, four or five Lebanese players
were taken to nearby hospital because of injury. Joe Vogel had seven
stitches on his forehead while XXX had five stitches. ABC's
announcement was harshly criticized by media from various countries.
Observors said ABC president Cheng Man-kee picked the easy road by
suspending only Chang Chen because he doesn't want to mix it up with
hosting China.
Day
3, July 22, 2001: China - Hong Kong 99-44
223cm C Yao Ming's injury is a concern in the quarterfinal. Yao
was taken to the locker room after a minor injury in the game
Day
2, July 21, 2001: Qatar China 58-87 (Daoud Daoud 14 Hu
Weidong 31, Lee Xiao-yung 18,
Lee Nan 13, Wang 10)
China did not get serious until the second half.
Day
1, July 20, 2001: China Thailand 121-46 (Wang 17+7reb, Yao,
16+17reb, Batere 13+11reb, Li Nan 18, Gong Xiaobin 12, Zhang Jinsong
12, Liu Yudong 9 -)
Home team China cruised by Thailand 121-46 with every player
contributed.
